well i found a BIG buck that disagreed with the thread title this am at 5:30 driving to work. happened right in front of the tijeras ranger station on S337 at 40mph to zero. the dodge dakota a hundred feet or so in front of me never even saw him to hit his brakes... i did... (thank god no one was riding my ass and not paying attention or i'd have gotten both ends) i was just 3 feet too late, GD my subi has brakes. basically stopped underneath the deer as he jumped, he stomped my hood, kicked off my scoop, bent the deflector/diffusers inside, and just missed stomping my intercooler. i had thoughts 2 or 3 times in slow motion thinking i might stop in time as he walked into my lane, ALMOST... i need stickier tires ;):bang:
estimates so far are north of $1700 to replace the hood, scoop, diffusers, and repaint. (aluminum hood, noone will fix) and the bits and painting... can't believe all he did was the hood, he walked off, never even falling over. slowmotion distinctively remember his belly was above my hood walking, all i saw was ribs on the brakes. can't imagine i'd be typing this if i didn't see him since him and his big ass rack would have been in my lap at 40mph. cruiser would have been better for me, but much worse for him and the cruiser if i had been driving it. just can't stop 6k#+ as fast as my sti, even at ABS lockup, bet i'd have a totaled 80 with busted KC's, grill, headlights, hood, and bent ARB... not sure which would be worse... i'll take picking up my scoop off the highway and driving to work i guess... can't help but think if i was just paying just a tiny bit more attention I'd have watched him walk in front of me. but at that rate, 3 feet of stopping time is hard to quantify in reaction time.... yes i could calculate d=v*t +1/2a*t+d0 (don't crucify my typo, that's off the top of my head) but i don't want to guess ~1+g of decell and work out the initial conditions...:flipoff2::D

for you pic mongers.

Glad you are ok, as well as the deer. I think the ARB would have fared better than you think. The deer not so much.

quite possible. glad we didn't have to find out for his sake.

Glad you're OK, John, and there isn't more damage to your STI. I think the ARB on your 80 might have thrown him under the bus, no pun intended. That's what they're for. Hope your deductible isn't too high. Bummer all round, sorry.

Actually, I think they are made to survive impacts from kangaroos.

Glad your ok. Last time in one trip in Arkansas we hit two deer in the 60. Both deer died sad to say, cruiser busted light and grill and no other damage. The cruiser was too high for them. MIke

boy if i ever use my ARB for that it's safe to say that's not normal work commute.

i'm sure the ARB would have moved the damage from vehicle to deer, he was a big buck and walked away without even falling down. unless i was like 2 minutes later down the hill because i was in the cruiser :hillbilly:the outcome would have been much different for him.

Glad you came out OK! My ARB was in fender bender once. Hardly a scratch but trashed the other guy's fenders. Same thing would have happened with deer unless a hoof made it through to radiator.
