Got another European visitor in the house that wants to see a little back country, but doesn't want the stress of the hard stuff- at least not yet. I and a friend are going to head up to the Four Peaks area and explore some forest roads or whatever. The friend is driving a stock FJ Cruiser and I promised that this time I wouldn't give him any more trail scars, so this one will be stock friendly.

Four Peaks area is the only thing I can think of at the moment, but if anyone has something else they wanted to check out I'm open to suggestions. Would like it to be north of Phoenix, relatively close, and stock friendly. Unless the plan changes, I'm thinking to meet at the Baja station north of Fountain Hills on 87 at 9 AM Saturday. Post up if you're interested.

one of my favs is to take boody basin up through crown king,,, through minnehaha flats out to kirkland jct. and have lunch at the BBQ place in yarnell. then heading towards wickenburg take the scenic loop road to see box canyon and eventually to the castle hot springs rd. lots of thing to check out and see on that long day of easy driving.

hey, your guest might get a kick out of seeing the indian ruins at el oso mine turn off that road is stock freindly till that point! the last time i had the 40 down the pine flats road i pushed 3" of brush down each side . that would be bad for decent paint . good chance ill go!:hillbilly:

That sounds like what I'm looking for. Should we leave earlier than 9, or plan to have dinner on the trail, or both, or neither? In other words, how long do you figure this trail to take? I would like to have some 'hang out' time as well.
I found this writeup http://www.expeditionswest.com/adventures/2004/el_oso/index.html but it doesn't mention ruins. Not that it's a deal breaker, just sounded interesting.

a few years ago we found a loop hole in the hunting regs that said ok to hunt deer if no other hunts are open in that area . so we went bow hunting in dec up top of four peaks! we found the ruins less than a 1/4 mile from the el oso mine pine flat split a year after the big fire. the forest is reclaiming the land. if you dont know where to look its hard to find! if you took 40yards off a foot ball field , thats how big the building was. just a rubble wall now still cool to see :hillbilly:

From your end of the city, The 87 towards Payson is pretty well a given. I ran that area to the point of boredom. There are a lot of fun trails there.
If you want to head NW, I will give a tour of the old saloons, as well as the old mining trails. The Prescott area is filled with history, and affords a real idea of the old west. Within every few miles on every forest road is an historic mine site. Most of them are in my backyard.
I visit them before work on weekday mornings. They are that close. I often go wheeling in the morning before work. It's kinda fun in the AM. There is nobody out there!
Most of my clients do not want me around before 10 AM, because I tend to be noisy. I use power tools.
I should preface this by allowing that I am self-employed. My boss is a slave-driver. I work myself to death. But my boss lets me have a cold beer at lunchtime. I only ever work 12 hours a day. I have to draw the line somewhere! Half of the day and night is enough! Half of a day is enough!
If you want to run some trails in the Prescott area, Let me know.

my little route is about 6 mile off 4 peaks road. we could go down the back an around go over roosevlt dam an check out the tonto cliff dwelling.(have to pay) an come back down apache trail and get them one of the where the h#%$ is tortilla flats tee shirts! that makes for a long day but ya end up by the old steak house .would take care of dinner:meh:

The wife runs the visitors through the Apache Trail on her own. :D

i cant see the ruins taking more than an hour would like to go down to pine flats its neat down there but as i said bushy

Well, we can play it by ear, I have no particular wishes except to keep it stocker friendly. We'll be bringing our lunch, and figure on getting home around or before dark unless we stop for steaks. See you at the Baja.

Anyone else wants to go, either post up tonight or be there on time.
