I'm not going to get one, but i thought it would be interesting to see if anyone has ever sighted one of these factory roof racks for the troopy

my internal cage is the same as theirs shown below, but with more reinforcing bars and all inside.

this is sort of what i had planned, I was going to bolt my RTT straight to the roof (with as little clearance as possible) and then support it from underneath with the rollcage inside. After seeing your first photo today I was thinking about scrapping that idea and just using the OEM side bolted mounts for the roofrack to mount the RTT, but they are the most expensive side mounts on the planet, and i would still have to do a fair amount of fabrication. But no holes in the flat part of the roof which had me a little worried.

Seeing what these guys have done now gives me a little more faith in my original plan, but the OEM side mounts are still tempting, maybe I'll copy them.

Never knew they were factory. These roof racks are pretty common on the Troopys in East Africa.

Here's a couple of photos of people staring at the rack.

If I was going to get a RR , I would go with something like this because of its low drag and full length. You could probably buy brackets from Rhino Rack and make the platform yourself.

yeah the trouble for me with all the roofracks is they put at least a 1-2" gap in the middle of the roof, and with the thickness of the racks themselves, the RTT is then really high... troopies are already top heavy. My idea is to use the RTT as the rack itself with two supporting bars running longitudinally along the side low points so RTT itself clears the roof by no more than 1/4" at the high point in the middle.

The other issue i have with the aftermarket racks is how they clamp the sill. i destroyed the sills on my first troopy with those sorts of mounts. So i had discounted any type of side mount until i saw these OEM ones that bolt on and leave the flimsy sill alone.

I've ordered all the bits for one full OEM side mount (gulp!) and when it comes i'll check out the design and if i like how it supports i'll try to clone 7 more. If no good, I'll go back to the idea of holes through the roof supported by the roll cage.

Drilling holes in the roof and building an internal cage is even less appealing than damaging a gutter. I can see leaks developing regardless of how much silicon you fill them up with
Roof racks are for light loads on road, maybe 200kg max spread evenly

On my first troopy the sill mounted roof rack continuously cracked the sills all around and the resulting rust meant permanent leaks after 30K for another 90K. By drilling holes for bolts, adding reinforcing back plates with two nuts each, sealing with sikaflex 227 and welding the plate, then painting (full respray inside and out) , I'm not too worried about leaks through the nut thread which will be loctited and painted over. For me supporting the load evenly and making sure those load points don't destroy the roof sill join is the most important thing. My existing roll cage is bolted to the pillars almost up to the roof, so with some further bolts in the middle of the roof to support the load, done correctly, I'm thinking the stress/flex on the sill joints will be reduced.

I have a Hannibal custom rack with 8 feet(only the front 2 are gutter mounted) using the OEM 6 mounting points ..

Nice. Did your troopy already have the OEM mounts or did you have to add them?... I'm wondering how much drilling and welding will be required.

how dangerous this forum is... mere curiosity was converted into another OEM parts purchase!
