Should service be more $$ for Lexus?

It looks to me like you got charged two different price points for the same parts (timing belt and water pump/seals). I'd certainly contact the service advisor and at least ask why.

Think the price differential has more to do with lack of competition in a particular MSA (We have 2 Lexus dealers - same ownership - maybe 8 Toyota). Was quoted $46 odd for an air filter. Same 50040 filter at Toyota was $22. Was ordering some stuff from sparkplugs.com (Denso) so I paid $16 there - but wouldnt have got ahead if I didnt have other stuff coming. But hey, they have gourmet coffee if you have to wait, a plasma TV and leather clad waiting room - that aint free. To an extent, you pay for the experience. The service (warranty) really has been impeccable at Lexus tho - much better than my aggregate experience over the last 15 years with Toyota.

Same issue with Land Rover - dealer (stand alone) in a smaller market a hundred miles up the road charged less than half what the only local dealer (Rover,Porsche,Aston, Ferrarri etc) does for services.

Looking at those prices - I dont think you got off to bad.

A difference in price would be expected if the vehicles were taken to different dealerships; i.e. one to Toyota and the other to Lexus.

However, this was not the case as I understand it. Both vehicles were taken to the same Toyota dealership.

Correct.

My local Toyota dealer wont touch either of my Lexus, so I read it wrong. Surely they didnt source the parts from Lexus would they? Interested in the answer now.

Ok, just called him and he said that the parts price has gone up since I did the LC 5 weeks ago. I say BS, but what am I going to do.

Have your buddy call them up tomorrow and ask for a quote for a T-belt job on an LC. Then compare quote to what you paid on your LX. But, to his credit, most price changes do happen on the 1st of the year.

If they're working off of the Lexus repair price list, then won't the lexus list have the cost of the "free" loaner car built in? That's the only real difference that would be expected.

even tho it's the same parts, maybe they simply called across the street and got the Lexus parts- thus the price difference (?)

Yeah the diffs are so easy, that's $100 that you could have spent on dinner out w/ the wife or something.

I would say hog wash and at the very least ask to speak to the service manager. You've clearly spent a pile of money at this dealership in the last two months and it's reasonalbe to assume that anybody having the same work done in 5 weeks time span should pay the same price.

Any good service manager would at least refund you the business or offer you like kind compensation for future service needs.

In my experience, a Lexus dealer wants about 30 to 40% more for same (Toyota) parts as a Toyota dealer.

And that's before any negotiation - the local Toyota parts counter will usually knock 5 to 10% off, depending on who I ask, but the Lexus dealer flat out says "no" to discount.

I expect the Lexus dealer screws a similar screw on the labor.

The Lexus service dept is top notch. Lexus is awesome with this and very good responding to customers, in my experience.
Great service and extras to the customers. That is probably reflected in the cost but is worth it if you service your vehicle at the dealership, imo.

Their prices maybe high but they have also taken care of things for no charge. Compared to the horrid service I've gotten at a Toyota dealership, the waste of time costs much more than cost of Lexus service.

It varies by dealer. But for the most part, my experience with Lexus service (Chattanooga, TN; Greenville, SC) is that they are no better than any other dealer. Sure, they offered a free car wash - but I stopped accepting after the first one, because they did a poor job, leaving dirt on the finish and then wiping through that dirt with a drying cloth, which resulted in swirl marks in the paint. They would provide a loaner car for warranty work if more than a couple hours, but that stopped when the warranty expired.

I've had horrid service at ALL dealers. And the kicker is that ALL dealer personnel lie to me, try to mislead me, overcharge me, etc. - every time I set foot on a dealer lot or in the showroom, and certainly, the service dept.

The only dealer Parts Dept that has lied to me has been - you guessed it - a Lexus Parts Dept. They claimed that the "Lexus" brake parts priced 40% higher than Toyota parts were pricier because "maybe" the Lexus LX470 had some unique feature, or maybe was heavier than the LC, and therefore "needed" the Lexus brake parts. Then they refused to give me the part numbers, necessary to cross-reference to Toyota part numbers.

(Of course, it turned out that the Toyota brake parts were exactly the same as the "Lexus" brake parts, only less than 2/3 of the price.)

There you have it - a real rant, by someone fed up with being lied to by dealers, including (especially) Lexus dealers.

That's disappointing Tink
I've had the opposite experience w/ Lexus.

tho my local Toyota dealer has a great parts dept (kind of rendered defunct b/c I use C-dan but good for quick stuff)

In my area, dealing with Toyota service is a nightmare. With my wife's Mercedes, getting service done was almost like going to a nice restaurant.

I'm hoping that Lexus is closer to Mercedes service, and less like Toyota service. I'll find out if my dealer ever finds a way to produce the car I have on order.

Maybe it's my dorky appearance. (I sometimes wonder if dealers try to pull the wool over my eyes because I look like a fool, somehow...)

Yah, I remember when I first bought the LX470. It had a front end alignment issue, from the factory - wouldn't track straight, pulled to the left. (One of my specialties was alignments, when I was a young greasemonkey, so I know that a front end in good shape can be aligned to track straight, hold the crown of the road, etc.)

I was on the third visit to the dealer to get it corrected, and this time, both the service manager and the sales manager who sold me the LX rode with me.

They were trying to convince me that the alignment was OK, I said no, it's not. Told them: "Remember - 'The Relentless Pursuit Of Perfection' - isn't that Lexus' slogan?" (At that time it was "relentless" - nowadays, it's "Passionate Pursuit of Perfection". Guess "relentless" was too hard to sustain...)

Eventually, they got the alignment dialed in correctly. AFTER setting it to my recommended settings. On the 4th visit for alignment correction.

Nope, they're just like any other dealer, only more costly, in my experience.

I'm mainly concerned with getting top-notch work done, by honest people who speak truth to me. I don't care if the service manager is super-butt-kissing, or if the waiting room is nicer, or if they offer a free (swirly-marking) car wash.

Last time I had anything done to the LX, it was to get the tires balanced. Took it to an old wrench-spinning buddy, now working at the local Chrysler Dealer. By working directly with him on the job, I got A+ results.

That sucks.

We've had Lexus vehicles in the family since the LS400 first debuted and we've had extremely good luck. Yes, it is expensive but our dealers have been fantastic from sales to service.

Our experiences with Honda and Toyota have also been very good.

The only bad dealer experiences we repeatedly encountered was BMW. Neither Crevier nor Irvine (here in S. Orange County) know the first thing about customer service and treat you as if you should be luckly to be spending $50K on one of their vehicles. And talk about horrible dealership service. Try having the expensive, optional HID headlamps on a $50K + M3 break three times in less than one year (they are supposed to self level but keep breaking in the down position so that you're doing a great job of lighting up the street three feet in front of the car and nothing else) only to be told it's your fault because you drive the "ultimate driving machine" too hard. Now keep in mind this is a very stiffly sprung car and I didn't have the factory optional 19" wheels on it, only the 18'" wheels and that S.CA roads are largely billiard table smooth.

Infuriating. At least now all BMW's are uglier that toad ass so I'm not even tempted to deal with their BS anymore.

PCV valve costs $2 and take 2 minutes to replace. You paid $28+

I would consider finding an indepenant mechanic who will work on both vehicles for the same $.

Maybe...

I've had nothing but exceptional service from my local Lexus dealerships. I bought my 80 as a CPO which meant that they extended the bumper-to-bumper warranty to 100k miles. I went to the same service guy each time I went in. Never had a problem. Always got great service. Based on the service alone, my next vehicle will be a lexus as well.
