Should I upgrade to a newer LX?

I’m particularly fond of the 08-11 LX years. I hate, hate the seat mounted DVD screens on 13+.

I have young kids and we do long road trips, so the drop down DVD player is clutch to have here and there. Once we close the screen though, it’s out of sight out of mind. Those seat-mounted screens just seem to stare back at you when they are off.

I was lucky to find a replacement 2010 w/ 81k miles last fall. The low miles and killer maintenance history came at a bit of cost…could have easily gotten into a high mileage 2013/4 at around the same cost. I hope this thing lasts forever.

Same here. We do 12-hr trips to visit family a few times a year. We pack books, travel games, magnet blocks on small tin baking sheets, crosswords, and sudoku. We would rather keep their eyes off of screens and their minds active and engaged instead of shut off. We always stop for lunch at a playground about halfway through the trip to burn off some energy. When there is about 2-3 hours left in the trip, they get to watch a movie.

The older I get I’m thinking I want to add an AlWD Sienna to my small fleet. But I would have to add a small lift and or rims and tires for sure. The new ones look pretty cool.😎

Ultimate ski trip car

The latest 2016+ LX570 with some mods including the CBI hour glass trim looks pretty impressive to me

Woodland edition is AWD with a 1" lift. And 1500W of power in the back.

If you could do it for 10-15k I think it's worth it. Bigger brakes, 8-speed, more comfortable seats, and fresh rubber are worth that trade-off IMO. The infotainment is pretty rough but you do get used to it. There are Carplay options and even Touchscreens from what I have seen. I'm looking into possible options myself since it's really the only downside.

I am also thinking of looking at a Land Cruiser (would solve my AHC paranoia) but they are so much more than the LX.

Just to play a devils advocate.. 😈 Bigger brakes can be had on 08+ for sub-$500, some actually prefer the 6 speed, the age of rubber at $10k difference is most likely 3MY or so.

You're not wrong. I have been pouring obscene amounts of cash into my 100 series trying to get it back to glory, so I'm not against refreshing high-mileage rigs. It's hard to put a price on the seats though! :D

If yours is rust free, I wouldn’t worry one bit about AHC as it’s easily maintained/refreshed. I’d run what you brung all day long and spend the money on the fun stuff.

I really like that front end. Only 2016+?

CBI says 2019+. Did someone make it fit a 2016?
Good point. I am assuming it can be made to work on 16+ as the front end bumper and frame has not changed as far as I know. Be interesting to hear from those MUD’ers who have done this mod. I have seen a thread on this recently so maybe worth asking there.

In my specific case I am interested to buy a 16+ LX570 by around 2030 to replace my 2014 535d, which I expect will then have died of old age.

Man, don't let the paranoia get to you. Vehicles with "air suspensions" get perhaps deservedly a bad rap, but ours is not that.

You already have a Land Cruiser that happens to be branded as an LX in the states. Overseas, the version with AHC is known as the Land Cruiser VX in top shelf trim. AHC hydraulics and accumulators has more likeness to heavy equipment and earthmovers. You've got many on here that rock crawl on 37s and 40s with AHC. I myself put 2200lbs payload on it regularly when towing, or run it hard in the desert chasing Raptors. The system is as robust as they come, on par and built to the same standard that you would expect for any other part of a Land Cruiser.

I’ve driven a 2015 lx for almost 5 years. I’m getting the itch for something new. Bought my wife a 2017 and love it. It feels like a different car in many ways. The interior is much nicer in my opinion. The exterior is growing on me. Both of my cars are paid off, I hate a car payment, but if you have the means, splurge.

For what it is worth, I had a 2013 LC which I traded for my current 2018 LC. I personally liked the transmission better in the 13 and it consistently got better mileage than the 18 making the same highway drive weekly.

Is your current LX paid for? You mention having some breathing room with a warranty and AHC being your biggest fear. Is reliability the driving factor in the purchase? Is it financially driven? Or just desire for something new? If it's desire, and funds are unlimited, buy / drive what you like and enjoy life. Otherwise, if you like what you have, it's almost always cheaper to keep it. Especially if what you currently drive doesn't have a payment on it. Just set aside some funds for any issues that could arise and keep on trucking the 13 LX.

I'm in a similar situation as to when is the right time to sell my 2005 LC and get into something newer. I currently have 230k miles on mine and I drive quite a bit with kids sports. I don't mind driving it for another 5 years but I'm also currently shopping for a 2013 - 15 LX. Mine is mostly desire driven and when I find the right one, I'll jump on it. If not, I'm completely happy driving what I have. It's paid for and I have a substantial amount set aside in case something comes up.
I'm driving an old 2001LX470. I upgraded to a 2013 LX570 and hated it. Not a solidly built vehicle (for me). Sold it back to a dealership for profit though. Looking at a lower mile LC. You recommend a 2005? Why are you moving from a LC to a LX?

Lol, this could have been a private message.

A little late to the party but here are my 2 cents. We have 2016 LX (bought with 2K miles) and recent addition of 2011 LX (183K miles)

1. 2016 - nicer interior, quiet, ride is almost too smooth (don't really feel the road) but better in sport mode. Infotainment mouse thing is just stupid design. Everyone who rides in the 2016 likes it. No back of seat screens so we don;t have to worry about protecting them
2. 2011 - seems a little quicker (neither are quick), infotainment center is ancient , ride is similar to 2016 but a not quiet as soft. I bought this one for OR as 2016 is strictly a DD / mall crawler.

My work vehicle is 2014 Sequoia. Just passed 260K with no repair shop time needed. So I would expect same for well maintained LX If you have the funds keep the current LX and mod it or just maintain it Then you could also get something like a used GX for much less- yeah it's a bit smaller but still very nice and capable
