Should I upgrade to a newer LX?

I have been thinking about a new truck for awhile but I am not super excited about the new 250 series. So I have started considering a newer LX570, but I am not sure it makes sense.

I currently have a 2013 LX 570 with 170k miles. It is in pretty good shape all things considered. Most everything works, except the driver vented seat which runs loud and weak. I replaced my radiator. All 4WD systems seem to be in good shape. I do have the 4WD light issue frequently but it always goes away after a bit of driving. The leather and body are in decent shape. My main concerns are 1. the age and mileage 2. my AHC is fine but, in its old age, it is my biggest fear.

What I am considering is either a 1. 2016ish truck to get the refreshed model. $45-50k range. I could get most the same amenities and a younger truck. The rear TV's seem a little more useful, with HDMI, than the worthless ones I have now. But I would be spending $20k+ more for not that different a truck. Would it be better to put that money into my 2013? What are the pluses and minus of the 2016ish trucks? 2. a 2021ish Lexus Certified Truck in the $60-70k range. Like new condition. A little breathing room with a warranty. But is it really worth the extra $40k+? I am interested in opinions on the different years or suggestions for using some money on my 2013. I had dreams of building an overlander but that has faded. I do want to beef it up a bit but nothing hard core. Would I be better off spending some money buying a daily driver and building out my LX as a play toy? Thanks for any insight.

Yes

Similar situation. I have a 2011 LX with 155K. It is in overall very good condition. A 2016 is available near me. Same color, fewer miles. It wasn't worth it to me to make the incremental change for ~$20,000 or so. I did recently recover my front seats and added carplay as an 'update' and am happy with that.

Same boat with ‘13 LX, I have driven and like the ‘16’s and above, but I have a real hard time with the infotainment system, it is without a doubt the very worst one I have ever tried using. My aftermarket guy has an Apple car play unit that is $800 installed but I don’t know if trading up makes sense. I have looked at the QX 80 and the new Armada both seem like amazing bargains compared to the LX all 3 are made in Japan.

I might be the minority in my opinion here, but I actually prefer the '13-15 LX570s over '16-21, both exterior and interior. I would have some funds set aside for additional maintenance with 150-170k+ mile rigs. It will still be a fraction of jumping to another rig and if properly maintained, will have significant life remaining. Assuming of course there are no major rust issues...

This all depends on how long you think you will keep your LX. If you think it’s your forever vehicle, then makes sense to get the newest one you can afford. If you think your ownership will probably swing towards something else in the next 5 years (maybe up to 10) then I wouldn’t bother upgrading. 40k seems like a lot, but it’s also what a well optioned Rav4 costs, and if it buys you 8 years newer plastic and leather, that will go along way 20 years from now to how nice your LX still is.

I had a '19 LX that I drove for a few months and hated. The infotainment system was unusable for an old Luddite like me and the "Predator" looks of the front end never appealed to me. Bought a '14 and love it. Plan on driving it until they take my keys away!!

Is your current LX paid for? You mention having some breathing room with a warranty and AHC being your biggest fear. Is reliability the driving factor in the purchase? Is it financially driven? Or just desire for something new? If it's desire, and funds are unlimited, buy / drive what you like and enjoy life. Otherwise, if you like what you have, it's almost always cheaper to keep it. Especially if what you currently drive doesn't have a payment on it. Just set aside some funds for any issues that could arise and keep on trucking the 13 LX.

I'm in a similar situation as to when is the right time to sell my 2005 LC and get into something newer. I currently have 230k miles on mine and I drive quite a bit with kids sports. I don't mind driving it for another 5 years but I'm also currently shopping for a 2013 - 15 LX. Mine is mostly desire driven and when I find the right one, I'll jump on it. If not, I'm completely happy driving what I have. It's paid for and I have a substantial amount set aside in case something comes up.

Better brakes, all speed cruise control, heads up display.
I only have experience with my 2020, the seats are probably about the same, loud and not very strong

Only you could determine the net cost.. and if it is worth it to you. If you need a loan, keep in mind the interest now is savage compared to what you had on your 2013 .

I would go with newest year model, even a 2020 in few years it would be 8 years old (not that there is anything wrong with driving 8 year old LX/LX), if you want to enjoy the new experience now get the newest one you can get.

Not worth it, IMO. That's a lot of money for what is mostly a cosmetic upgrade.

Only light surface rust.

Ideally I want to keep my truck forever. I am not a big fan of the direction a lot of Toyotas and Lexus are going.

My truck is paid for and I would pay cash for the upgrade. I appreciate you all's opinions on if it is worth the upgrade. As much as I would like for my kid to be able to plug into HDMI to play videos. Is it worth 20K? These are the tough questions. I guess going from 2013 to 2016 is a pretty small move for $20k, though some have quite a few less miles for their age. But I guess things can break even in a younger truck. Maybe if I am going to upgrade going to a 2021 would be better, but also A LOT more expense. Are the pluses worth the HUGE depreciation? I am leaning towards no.

If it helps, here's my plan for the kids in the back. Mine are teenagers and want USB power much more than any factory screen. Why do I have these before the LX they will go in? Mostly because I'm an idiot and buy stuff when it's on sale versus when I actually need it. But also because I was supposed to pick one up last week but it ended up having the cam tower leak. On to my point.

These USB plugs will get mounted into the Victory 4x4 screen delete covers. The plug assemblies are just wide enough to cover the 3 slotted holes in the cover plate and do not have any backlighting. I wouldn't want to be staring at a little blue light every time I rode back there and I assume my kids, or any other passengers, wouldn't want to either. It will take some cutting of the cover plate but that is well within my skillset. Add in some headrest mounted tablet holders and you'll be good to go. No HDMI connections needed.

If you just want HDMI in the back, there is an adapter you can by that accepts HDMI and outputs the analog A/V cables. I have the set up to do it, even though, i've never actually used it, other than to test it. But basically, lets you plug in a firestick or something to the rear screens.

Get the kids to put the phones down😳

You could get the Car Care Nut to fix cam tower leaks, timing chain rattle, timing cover leaks, and the coolant valley leak on your 3UR-FE for 1/4 of what it would cost to trade into a $45-50k vehicle. And you wouldn’t have to deal with the non-touchscreen console mouse.

I'd use the same $35k to buy another 13-15 LX (for a total of 2).

Drive one, mod the other.

But I'm a little weird like that....

Right? Makes me want to get another early model year LX.

Slice the roof off, cap with with an RTT, and build a simple interior, and make it a dedicated camper.

Maybe even another to strip everything out, throw on 37s, weld on some race suspension, and run her wide open like Monica in Baja.

Boy would those be great fun on the relative cheap.

Enduro Campers is working on a 200 series chop like a Maltec...
