Okay, after having the 2 owner LC from PA delivered & removing the running boards!! I see some rust & corrosion!! Wondering if I should sell it or fix it. I paid $6,000 for it. It's got 151k miles. Runs & shifts amazing. But here are some pics!

If you're planning an expensive no-holds-barred build, start with a better truck.

But if you just want to wheel it hard, keep it. There's something nice about not having a lot of money in a rig.

I think I'll take a week & think about it!! Still waiting on the title from DMV anyway!!

$6k for a truck with only 151k on it is not bad at all.

I have mine booked into a car restoration specialist for this same issue, pretty minor repair for a uk vehicle, but the rust does need to be cut out and not covered over like your previous repair. A day with a wire wheel on the underside and some rust prevention product and it should be good. I would make a decision after the work is carried out.

Of coarse you can get rid of rust, it just costs money. Cutting it out is the best repair, chemically converting and protecting it can slow it down enough as to not need to worry about it. You need to make a proper assessment as to the best cost effective repair. Obviously a rust free truck would be best, but again it's all down to cost.
Some of the nicest classic cars in the world are restored rust buckets, a bare metal respray is £10,000+ for a land cruiser 100 though, which is a full body restoration. Expensive, but it will take 100's of hours of labour.

I may put it on the mud classifieds & craigslist for $6,000. Not sure yet!!

You might want to pull the rear mud flaps and look at the fender well behind the flap as well. I bet you will find more corrosion.

I am in the same situation with my budget cruiser. My plan is to drive it until it decides to retire...in another 200k miles. It is a daily driver now but will transition to a family adventure rig as the years pass. This winter I plan to abrasive blast the rust, apply a coat of POR15 and top coat with a rattle can color match paint to slow or stop the rust progress. I don't plan to do any metal work and will simply leave the rust holes open to drain.

As for rust, there is an older post of a rusted 100 that makes yours look like it just came off the show room floor.

Thanks for the responses gents!!

If everything else is good I would say $6K still bought a lot of truck. Is it me or does pic1 have bondo on it. If so, too bad the PO didn't do a better fix. Other than pics 1 and 3 the rest looks normal for the age based on where I live (Missouri not Texas). More in the rust belt this would probably be considered better than normal.

Yeah. Other than the left rocker & quarter there is no more rust on the body!! But the rear locker works well. So I don't see a problem getting my money out of it.

It really isn't that bad. And with only 150K, I'd definitely just keep it!!

I had similar rust issues with mine too; with some elbow grease, a good grinder, and some rust converter I'm good to go. If the rest of the truck is good then just show it some love and drive the crap out of it.

Selling means disclosing and in turn you might also be taking a hit $.

I've made peace that this is my rig and for better or worse I'm gonna see it through :steer:

That's not rust, that's patina! If you wanted a show truck more money would have been invested up front right? Drive it for awhile and search for a cleaner one if it bothers you. I'm so used to working on rusty vehicles now, it's just part of life up here.

I am sure if you are uneasy about the rust another member here would gladly buy it off you for the $6k you spent. I know that since I have gotten my LC many of my friends and family have gained interest. Would be an easy sell to someone I know.

I'm probably going to list it this week for $6,000 to a mud member!! Will be putting it on craigslist after the mud ad for $7,000.

Just got quoted £350 ($460), to get all rust cut out, fabricate new panel and to weld it in place. It will be blended in to match the original shape, as in not just a patched plate over the top. This price is without painting though.
