05-2002 Nearly 280K on the clock, one owner, fluid looks fine, but I can't find where we had the trans flushed/changed last (but it has been done I am certain of that) (some of the toyota online data doesn't go back that far) shifts absolutely fine. This is mostly a PM. To make matters worse, BOTH of our 100's are black, AND at one point toyota had all of the data for both VIN's in both VIN's service history in our owners portal. We got that straight but the 02 is mostly a backup rig and I just can't recall the last fluid change.

sooooo... planning on the 12qt exchange. The big question is the fight with the pan gasket. Is getting any wear paste off of the magnets and sludge out of the bottom of the pan worth what looks like a battle?

Lastly.. what fluid.. I see that it calls for ATF D-II or DEXRON III (DEXRON II). I think we may have put Mobil1 MV Syn in it last time,

Whether dropping the pan is worth the battle depends on what it looks like inside - which you won't now until you drop the pan.

With that mileage, there will be some debris, and if it were me, I'd want to know how much is in there and whether the filth is clutch (which you will see in the oil, but not on the magnets) or pressure plate (which you likely won't see in the oil, but will see on the magnets).

What's an 05-2002? Is the transmission an A343F or an A750F?

A343F - Manufacture date of May of 2002. I believe they may have switched to the A750F in fall of 2002 for the hundo's.

Gotcha. The reason I asked is the parts for the A343Fs are getting scare. If you need pressure plates, now is the time to get them.
 
There was, once upon a time, a kit that included the gaskets for overhaul and the clutches for a quick rebuild, but Toyota has delisted the latter. The gasket kit keeps coming and going, kind of like a ghost in the wind.

The steels never were listed as a kit; they have to be bought individually. There is a single plate, meant as a backing plate for the stack, for each clutch set, which are listed in the EPC. As long as the thickest one is available, you can make a thinner one from it, providing you know someone with a surface grinder. I had to resort to that last time.

It won't be too long before we're forced to use aftermarket parts to rebuild the A343Fs.

GREAT.. thanks for the heads up.. adds FIPG to his parts order.
 
The bead breaker tool is very handy; far better than the screwdriver or putty knife. It's a little smallish for my taste, though. No need to buy the Toyota tool; it's no better than this one.
