Hi Everyone. I'm new to LC's but not to Toyota's. I've had a 97 4Runner for 7 years and taken it many thousands of miles and gone wheeling in much of southern California. We've got a 4 year old and a 2 year old and hopefully more on the way and the 4runner is getting a bit cramped. I'd love an 80 series, but rear AC is a deal breaker for my wife. Anyways...

I found a 1999 Maroon 100 series with 165k miles local to me for $6500. It's not pristine but for the price I wouldn't expect it to be. It has a few issues that I've looked for and haven't found much.

The Good:
Cloth Seats
Rear AC
Very clean interior
Rear locker
Drive train appears in good condition
Test drives nice

The minor Bad:
*Paint is starting to oxidize (southern CA desert, it's better than rust. Might get machine polished or repainted later).
*Front climate controls are a little wonky. Only the high fan speed works, so I'd assume the blower resistor is out, but when I moved the fan speed selector it cut out completely and only came back on when I moved the knob back and forth randomly for a few minutes. Maybe bad contacts in the switch and bad resistor? I know there are people that rebuild the electric climate controls for 00+ 4runners, does anyone know of such a service for 100 series?
*Steering wheel falling apart
*Airbag light on and horn doesn't work, most probably spiral cable
*Needs new key, the old key's transponder came off and a separate regular key was cut
*Needs new CV shaft as boot is torn with a healthy amount of gime in the outer joint
*Dash is a little sun damaged, but I can get a dash cover
*Needs new tires (how big of tires can I fit without a lift and what ones look the best? JK :hillbilly:)
*Steering rack is grimey but doesn't seem to be leaking bad enough to drip anywhere. The guys driveway was clean.
*The tailgate power lock doesn't seem to work, but it opens from the inside or with the key just fine.

The possibly major bad:
*There were no Dash lights (except airbag) but when I hooked up my OBD both the Catalyst and Evaporative System tests were incomplete. This might make getting it smogged a PITA. I've had evap codes on my 4runner that aren't fun to chase down. Luckily in my county it only needs to pass smog when you transfer the title.
*Here's the weird one that I can't find much info on. Whenever you press the brake pedal some buzzer sounds. It is almost consistent. It sometimes doesn't do it at higher speeds. I know the ABS and master cylinder are one unit, and it can be hard/expensive to replace. The baffling part is that no lights accompany the noise. It seemed like the fluid level was okay, but I should've looked closer.

Anyways that's about it. I'm not set on it, but I like that it's close, it has a locker, no ahc, and cloth seats with relatively low miles. The price isn't bad, but fixing the above issues might put it more on par with other vehicles in better condition. This is the only local one I've seen in the few months I've been casually looking. The rest are 2+ hours away in San Diego. This would be mainly a family rig that we'd use for mild overlanding. The 4Runner isn't going away and will be used for more difficult trips. Thoughts?

Personally I'd pass and look for a nicer one. I have a 2002 with 240k miles and it is in perfect working order - the only paint issue being the front bumper clearcoat. It uses no oil and the leather is still decent. I'd estimate its worth ~$9k - I'm not ready to sell yet but just saying there are better ones out there for not a whole lot more money.

I've actually never seen a 100 with cloth seats. The price is on the high side for needing that amount of work, but if you are going to do the work yourself, and can drive the price down a good deal the year and mileage seem good. I've never worked on them, but I'm guessing getting rid of those electrical/HVAC gremlins sucks bad.

I would expect it to be in better shape with only 165,000 miles. Seems like a ton of problems for the asking price.

Seat covers mean bad leather most of time. Brake issue can get pricey. Anything mechanical can be fixed, body, paint and interior can get pricey if that stuff matters to you.

Dash warning lights should all light-up as key turned on. Maybe burned out bulbs, but not normal for most to be out.

I would pass...

If you're set on a 100 (which is a good thing ) finding one locally is a bit of a luxury and a few hours drive isn't abnormal. You didn't really mention where that fits in your budget. From the description of the issues you found there could be a few thousand more you have to put into it to get it family ready. Those cloth seats look really unique, odd even. Paint in the pictures doesn't look too bad. That license plate has only been smog tested once, back in 1999. Is this the original owner?

If you're not in any hurry and can spend a bit more I would pass. I do like that Maroon color though! My $0.02 since you asked!

Hey JBurt... Glad to see you here too... Did you sell your 3rd gen 4runner? Hope not.

The 2000+ cruisers have the ATRAC so you really don't need a locker.

Based on the repairs and state that is in, I'd say $3000. I spent nearly $1200 (for parts alone) to do the T-belt, shocks, radiator, CV's (aftermarket), fuel filter, plugs, coils, fluid change, etc,. Try offering $3000 if not, pass it. Too much work for a 99 with $6500 price tag.

Thanks for the replies guys. There's definitely better condition ones out there, and I'm not opposed to driving to LA or San Diego which opens a lot of options. I do really like the cloth seats, and the interior is in pretty good shape (with the exception of the HVAC controls).

My biggest concern is the brake issue. The more I read about people replacing the master cylinder/ABS the more I don't know if I want to deal with that. I know any 20ish year old car will have issues, but I can't find anyone posting anywhere about a warning buzzer sounding everytime you push on the brakes.

I think if I could narrow down the brake issue it might be worth trying to get a lower price. I do most of my own vehicle work, and it's cathartic so I don't mind, but I don't want to be the pioneer in solving this particular brake issue.

I do still have the 4runner, and I love it. It'll be here for hopefully a long time. It's only at 240k.

buy one from the south and ship it up to you for 1k. I bought my 2001 with 174k miles for 7300 bucks. everything worked but the sunroof. All that s*** that aint working will add up to 2-4k. It also tells me the previous owner didn't maintain the truck. find an enthusiast owned Ih8mud truck and buy it.

No need to buy from the south. Socal is nice and rust free.

I'm thinking I'll pass at this point but I'm very interested in the brake problem. Anyone had a door buzzer like sound that only occurs when the brake is depressed?

Any hint of brake problems (m/c, abs, buzzing, whatever) in a Hundy of that year should make you run, not walk. How's $3K sound for a new m/c assembly - if you can still find one?) I agree w others better rigs out there for only a bit more. Promise yourself you'll look at at least three more before settling in on one.

Yea the cars in arkansas are clean and rust free.
Socal cars have been running on fuel that is much more refined than what is piped to arkansas though and you can make your own inferences as to whether the engine reflects that.

I'd have passed at "Maroon". The brake issue is spendy but so is the lack of a master key. It requires a new ECU from Toyota along with the new key...you'll have $12K plus in that truck to get it right and it would have still been Maroon.

Good decision.

I love the fabric seats! Seller offers 18000 K mile warranty? Wow, it should be in good shape.

FWIW: Toyota instigated a program of replace the CPU/ECU free, you just pay for the key, and maybe labor IIRC. This program may still be in effect

So I bought one with just as many issues as this one. The electrical nightmare has been just that, a nightmare. I have chased down countless issues and still have a ton left to fix but am slowly getting there. The only difference is that I found mine for less than $2500. Mechanically this thing does exactly what it is supposed to do, cosmetically it has been mentally and physically draining to get anything done. Unfortunately, I still have not been able to get all the parts needed to fix all of the issues and what parts I have found have taken over a month to receive due to having to order from outside of the country. If the price were better, I would say go for it. But that isnt the case and due to that fact I would say to look for something that is going to be a little friendlier to your pocket since you have little ones that are obviously going to take priority. As far as the front controls for the AC, we found mine had a short in the actual control switch that caused this issue, we replaced the entire front control system with a new to us part and it now works as it should..... now to find the AC line that has a leak. 275k on mine so I expect issues like that though.
