Is anyone running Bilstein shocks? I just put a pair on the front (100 series cruiser).I seem to like them but have had nothing but stock to compare to. Also installed the new OME torsion bars and was extremely pleased with them. Also want to order tires.I have decided on goodyear wrangler mt's.Will 285/75r16 ride nice/fit? Thanks in advance!

I'm running Bilstein's on all four corners. I put them on at about 85,000 miles. No complaints.

I've recommended Bilsteins to friends on a variety of rigs, and they are all impressed with the difference in ride and handling.

Good choice.

You ought to try the terra grapplers. Nitto. They have been awesome on my 100.

Brad,

What Bilstein shocks are you running? Do you have the part #'s? What tires did you end up running?

I love dredging up these old threads...:)

You could always take a shock out and try to compress it that way to definetively test it as well as just feel it driving around. I used to Bilsteins on the were pretty good. Replaced with KYB's lately. They have a little more travel to them. You cannot go wrong with B's though.

What would make them better than Old Man Emus, or stock Toyota for that matter?
And how do you definitely tell if a shock needs replaced, short of it leaking all over (I'm skeptical of the bounce the vehicle method)?

People say that if you bounce the vehicle by the bumper and it bounces more than twice before settling down, you need new shocks. In my case, my old rig w/ 120K mi on the suspension was bottoming out on grocery store speed bumps, so it meant new OME springs, t-bars, shocks, and bushings. Do the bilstein's ride like shocks on a sports car (high pressure gas) vs low pressure gas shocks like the OME's?

I just replaced my stock shocks two weeks ago w/bilsteins, the ride is definately a bit nicer. The guys at the shop were pretty impressed with the fit and finish of the bilsteins (as opposed to other shocks they deal with rancho, ect..). Just a note, they mentioned the rears were a bitch to change out, seemed to be locktite on the factory shocks. As far as when to change them out-I probably didn't need to change the factory ones but wanted to upgrade them and am glad I did.

As far as tires go I don't know anything about the Wrangler M/T's but my work experience some years back using Goodyear Wrangler A/T's (unless they improved them) were that they sucked, I know it's like apples and oranges-A/T's opposed to M/T's, but when it comes time to change the michelins I going to stay away from goodyear and go with BF Goodrich or Bridgestone.

my3sons-

How many miles on your cruiser?

Maybe mine need replacing? 135,000 and no history of being replaced? Possibly causing the highway vibration problem, worse on cornering?

I had a set of 235x85's on my Discovery for 2 years and I could never keep them balanced. I will be going back to BFG MT's on my LC. I've had 3 sets of those over the years and never had a problem with them.

I put the 285's goodyear wrangler MT's.I really like the ride and the way they pull in the mud :) I will dig up the bilstein info for you.

took my OEM shocks off at 85K they were still OK.

is there a Bilsten for a lifted 100?

I have 285' BFG AT's, I like them alot, but now I kinda sorta wished I went with the same height but a little wider, forget if that a 305 or what, but the 285's look a bit skinny now that its lifted, height wise they are just fine......but when I did the 285's I was sure I was NEVER gonna lift it..........hell I should know myself better than that by now :D

With Bil's you have more choices of valving and shock length (up to 14's) than you do with OME. In fact, you can request custom valving. I've also heard that they last longer and are more durable than the OME's, but that's just grapevine talk, can't back it up.

Looks like a good deal to me. However, it's important to match the shock with the amount of lift and spring rate of your vehicle (it may work in this case, I don't know). For example, if you're lifted, you'll want to run a longer shock to compensate for the taller ride so you don't loose down travel in the rear. Likewise, if you offroad, you won't want to put a longer shock in a vehicle that's stock height because you run the risk of bottoming the shock out before you bottom out the suspension on bumpstops or spring binding.

If you're interested in the set off ebay, contact the seller and find the model number, and then contact Bilstein to see what the specs are on those. You can then make the determination (based on stock shock specs) whether they'll match your application.

The difference between say a Bilstein 5100 shock and an OME shock is like the difference between a Toyota Landcruiser and a Chevy Tahoe. Bilstein is just better quality and finish. The only question, is finding the right shock with the correct amount of travel, etc.

I have seen several blown, leaking OME shocks but only a couple Bilstein 5100's fail. The Bilsteins are firmer shocks than OME though.

I'm no expert but I am just reporting what I have seen based upon my personal experiences with OME and Bilstein products.

That does not work with OME shocks. If you compress them by hand slowly, the fluid moves past the bypass valving and it feels that the shocks does not have much resistance.
