Shocks that ride better than OME?

No, you have the right stuff on your truck. What do you mean with choppy? Also what tires, load rating and pressure are you running?

Is there a reason why I should stay away from the OME Soft shocks?

Nitto TG 285/75-16 D load @ 33psi.

Are my shocks the latest Nitrocharger version or do I have an old version? They are approx two years old.

FYI, Bilsteins used to be my favorite until I've seen several 5150s on Jeeps with broken mounting studs and pissed out seals within a few months. Bilstein wouldn't stand behind their junk, even being less than a year old on light to moderately wheeled vehicles. 90 day warranty. I've seen $20 shocks at Napa last way longer. My .02.

Agree, have seen the same.:frown:

I'm far from an ARB fan boy, their bumper is the biggest disappointment on my rig. That said the suspension, with some tuning has been a success, pleased with it for my use. It has ~80K mi on it with zero sag and the shocks are going strong, even with pretty good abuse.

That said there is no "perfect universal suspension", there can't be, the usage is too diverse and it's largely a subjective, personal preference thing. A perfect riding street setup is going to suck off road, a great rock setup is going to suck in the high speed stuff, A good load carrying/towing setup is going to suck at just about everything else, etc.

My rig sees DD duties, like to play in the rocks and do long scenic runs, like White Rim in one day! So it's a huge compromise, it can't do all of those things prefect, but does them without any big ride/handling issues. A bunch of my off road buddies have ridden in it, when I come to the "big" bumps (RR track, speed bumps) I accelerate, they have all been shocked, WOW this thing rides good!:hillbilly: Yes, you can feel the dime in the road, but it soaks up the big bumps very well.

A suspension that others rave about may suck on your rig with your preference, load, use, etc. The best bet is to hookup with a local club, ride/drive other rigs, setup like you want, in the terrain where you intend to travel and evaluate what you prefer.

So If I go With Billstein shocks or Pro Comp, all I would need is springs to get the lift? and caster correction for the 2.5 OME.

Or the OME Shocks give you the lift?

Springs give the lift and hold up any added weight(hence mediums and heavies). Shocks absorb/dampen the bumps. If the springs are designed for extra weight they may give you a harsh ride b.c they don't let the shocks do their job and have a spring rate designed for a heavier vehicle.

Shocks don't really give you a lift. You might see a small lift from adding shocks if they have a higher preload than the old ones, but they're not the primary force behind getting a lift. That's the springs job.

The new "sport" shocks just came out recently. I don't know anything about
Nitrocharger Sport Shock Absorbers

I had good experiences with OME shocks, don't know why so many people poo-poo them now. For the money, they are a no-brainer. :meh:

If you want expensive, there are several other good options...

The older style OME shocks are too soft in my opinion. Seems OME agrees with me as they tout their new nitrochargers as stiffer. :hhmm:

Rather than make a new thread i will just ask this here.

I am looking to run the OME 850 spring up front and i believe the 863 spring out back. I plan to have an ARB, dual battery, and either kaymar or slee rear bumper. But i would rather run a smoother better shock.

Would the Bilstein 7100 series shocks be better than the OME? Do the 7100 bolt right in or are adapters needed for the ends of the shock. Also, i read that a 400/100 valving is ideal for the FZJ-80, would this be a good valving in my situation? Where is a good place to buy them with custom valving?

I find the OME's too harsh (they are made in the munroe factory and munroe are cr@p).
I usually go for a set of big bore tough dog foam cells. never had a problem with many miles of outback abuse and DD duties.

Honestly like mentioned, find a local club or attend a event where you have various 80's to drive.

I like me OME J setup and works fine for me.

Are the new NITROCHARGER SPORT SHOCK ABSORBERS available for the 80 Series? Has anyone tried them yet?

I just swapped out the OME 861/862 stock height springs with Bilstein B46-1477/1478 shocks for the OME 850/863 with the new OME sport shocks and can say that I am very happy so far.

The new set up seems to have a smoother ride and better feel than the old but this may be due to the additional weight I have been adding over the last few years and now having the appropriate springs and shocks for the weight.

The OME sports are definetely beefier than the Bilsteins. One of the big problems I was having with the Bilsteins was that they were too short and I tore one top nut and one bottom nut through the washers on different occasions in 3 years of use. On the last one I took it into a very reputable LC mechanic and he said the shocks were too short not allowing full travel of the springs capability.

I have not had the new shocks on the trail yet so only time will tell how they perform.

I am a big fan of the Doetsch shocks. I haven't used them on a 80 but I have had good look with them on several other vechicals... The Doetsch's are also very reasonably priced too! Another thing, they also are very stout compared to the Pro comps and most other basic shocks on the market, IMO that is! They very well may end up on my 80.

answers are in this thread

Ah, that's just cause they got jeep on them. :)

ES 9000s great shock for the money.

Rancho 9000's good shock

Rancho XL's - killer shock, lots of effort to fit.
