Shocks recommendation for normal ride/driving

Hi guys,

As a school teacher always trying to save money, I was wondering if anyone could recommend shock replacements for all 4 tires. I think my 2000 LC has the original shocks still on them :)

Nothing fancy here. Just hoping to save some money (but not go too cheap) and get rid of some of the roll around the corners (which is quite bad).

The quote I got from a local repair place is $100 per shock, and another $100 to put them in. Either I, or my mechanic neighbor, might be able to do the install to save me money.

And then do the install yourself, I'm sure there's a write up on here somewhere (I'm actually almost positive I saw one recently)
 
The front shocks are very easy to do, I would do them yourself. If you have normal sized hands and arms you can do it with the tire on and the truck on the ground. The rear shocks are pretty easy as well, the only challenge is the top nut. I installed all 4 shocks in 45 minutes with a channel lock, adjustable wrench, and a :beer:.
 
I second OEM shocks for street, non-lifted and comfort. If you want a firmer damped shock then Bilstein.

did you use the channel lock to twist the shock body?
 
jeez I could not get mine to break loose. Need to PB blast them for a while I guess. They have been on the car for all 162k miles though.

Zip tie a 19mm box open to the top nut and then use a strap wrench on the shock body. I posted a different thread recently...
 
Wow. Thanks to everyone. Anyone know where the link is to do it yourself? I looked for a youtube video, but could not find one for the 2000 LC. Maybe I will have to create one!
 
If you have air, you can also drill through the body from inside the cab and drop a 19mm socket onto it. Not a huge deal for the truck, just paint the cut edge and plug with a rubber grommet. Somewhere there's a post of how to do this.

It's all personal preference, but I replaced OE shocks with OE shocks at about 95k mi., and it was just too soft a ride for me. I then went with OME and the 865 springs (lowest lift). Far, far better. 98% of my driving is onroad, in the big city. Then hunting in the fall. OME just feels far better.

I'm thinking the stock springs and torsion bars are just tired by this point in their lives and new OE shocks can't make up all that ground by themselves. That's my theory.

For fewer dollars, Bilstein would be a good next step.

Ease of changing shocks really depends on if you're in dry country, or the rust belt. Mine were easy.

Super90, sorry for asking a dumb question but what is the difference btw OE and OME? Original Equipment and...?

So which brand and model did you go with exactly?

I am interested in the stiffer ride too.

OME is Old Man Emu. Slee sells them as do other vendors. If you want something less cushy and all your driving is on road, you should go with Bilstein socks. They are around $70 each. They have great reviews here on 'mud
