well, leaks are solved... I suppose I could take a picture of the not-oil-soaked-floor... but well, I don'twanna

pulled the skid plate off - and thought "hmm, it couldn't simply be a plug that needs tightening".... actually, it was


then I drove it and one leak fixed itself (yay), and I found another leak that I didn't know I had (fuel line), and fixed the brake line leak.... then took it for a drive. It drives so nice now with it aligned - however, once it warmed up, it started running really lean.... and I have no idea why, so tomorrow I'll go bend my friend's ear and see if he has suggestions.... but once that's done, (and the dash is finished), it's on the road

so the rest of my day was Heeps.
First a leaky heep, this is the 2nd or 3rd time we've attempted to fix a water leak into the rear corner (it got hit there, fixed and now leaks)...

which I built EXACTLY to my wife's written spec..... then she looked at it, and it was perfect (yeah, right).... I need to add 2" to it.... yeah, laugh it up.... oh well, it is kind of funny because I knew I'd have to 'fix' it even with written specifications that were reviewed 10 minutes before construction began.
 
Buick had an infection* - we think - it seems the swollen leg was coincidental to the wheeling trip. My ankle is getting worse, though... which would be the 2nd time I've built a manual transmission vehicle and may have to change it because of a broken ankle....

*sorry for not updating, that week. I took him to the vet, they gave him rimadyl (and anti-inflammatory) - which, apparently, is doggie crack. So our bloodhounds counter surfed, opened a lid, took the pill bottle out, chewed the bottle (all while I was taking my wife's Heep out for a test drive to find nothing wrong), and ate 28 pills. 8 is toxic. So they all (3 dogs, 2 100 lbs and Buick who is 170) got to go to the emergency hospital for a round of vomiting, IVs, and charcoal.... thank heavens for pet insurance. If not, that would have been a $7,000 night to for us.
 
I am so glad I bought insurance for my dog. So far he has only injured US, but one of these days.

Induce doggie vomit with 5ml of peroxide... then get them walking or running around and about 5-10 minutes. Had to do that Sunday when one decided to eat some anti snail/slug stuff that hadn't dissolved in the grass.


Regarding the truck, does it run lean without an o2 at all plugged in? (That is, if the ecu cares about it that much and also reacts in a "safety" mode without)...

her bloodhounds are her children. I spent a lot for my Mastiff, but I'm not certain that I'd make the same spending decisions she did... that said, he was cheap only about $350 of that total.

about the truck, I had a new O2 sensor, so it was pretty easy to simply swap in a new one. If it doesn't work, then we'll try to figure out what's next... that said, it's supposed to rain for several days and I have a doggie cage to finish so the story will be continued

Oh yeah, I have the Sparco racing seats from it, the guy who bought it from me wanted the stock seats back in it.... to be honest, I couldn't tell a comfort difference; but the C3 seats were terrible at holding you in place so the Sparcos went it.

Glad Buck is on the mend!! Watch those pills Rimidyl can cause kidney/liver problems... I've had several dogs use it over the years. Gunner takes it after a long hike... otherwise, not regularly. 1 tablespoon of Hydrogen Peroxide makes the vomit... I had to do that in the back of my truck while my wife drove.

Pet insurance is expecialy good when you have a rowdy bunch!!
 
O2 pile.... I have several new and good used ones... then I realized, I had a brand new correct one (and I was all ready to blow a plug apart)


and back to the cage... errr crate


a few doors, and a floor and they'll be done




there is a lot more to this, shelves, but I refuse to build them until they're in the vehicle... too many ways the measurements could be wrong...

well dammit

good news is the thing ran great - it appears the O2 sensor was the problem

bad news

the motor seized. no oil on the outside, no hydro lock... simply stopped running while at idle.... my guess is the oil pickup fell off...

sigh - beside the money, the timing is terrible. I planned to use this at the end of June for an Overland adventure... guess I'll have to go with comfort and use the Hummer again
 
OMG that so totally sucks. Sorry to hear it. Not so many of that era engine around either. I'll keep my eyes open for ya.

There is a wrecker in Mill Creek advertising on Craigslist all the time. Might be worth investigating.
 
Well, you were regretting using that engine a few pages ago. Engineered obsolescence?
 
I think this motor had overheated prior to my getting it - the back half of the motor was packed with what happens when you don't change the orange stuff regularly.... that plus the spun bearing I knew about - and it probably has a crack in at least one liner... but still, I have a grand total of $130 in that bottom end (including the purchase price).... I could simply sing this song again and get another tahoe short block... dunno, time isn't my friend at the moment (but money left with time so.... I dunno)

as with anything, I should have not backed into a high-dollar build ... but it's what I did and trying to save money at the start is how this happened. That said, worst-case-scenario is I buy a $700 rebuilt motor from one of the gypsy builders on ebay and run it until I build the 383 that I should have built in the first place....

and finally - as I said in the very beginning, my point of blogging is to give as realistic of a view as possible of building something like this.... this is what it's like. Some good with some bad....
 
so I pulled the pan, and number 1 and 2 were toast
then I pulled this


and it's missing the washers on the bypass.... which explains everything I saw up to the failure. I'd been having trouble with (I thought) the dakota digital dash - it would show oil pressure for a bit, then it'd dive and say there was no oil pressure. That simply didn't make sense because I'd never hear the lifters rattling - I may have heard that today.... but too late.

and in post-mortem, I pulled the spark plugs and there's a lot of sign that I was getting coolant in at least 2 cylinders... so it wasn't long for this earth anyway.... probably should have had it magnafluxed - but hindsight is still 20/20

to be continued..... I'm thinking simply buying a replacement, Tahoe short block... however, I may build another 350 or 383.... dunno yet
