Anyone have advice on shippers for engines, trans, etc? I'm parting out my 62 and need to ship some heavy stuff all over and need some options.

Problem is I really cannot take off work to meet a shipping company so I'd need them to either get stuff on a Saturday or be able to do it all with out my help as the truck is at my mom's house and she sure as hell is not helping load a motor!

And yeah, I searched but not too thoroughly and came up with not much.
 
UPS will ship up to 150 lbs. So they can handle most everything other than the motor. For the motor you're looking @ a freight company. You will pay more if you don't have a loading dock or a fork-lift but they can do it.

If you have a buyer, it might save you some head aches if you state the buyer must arrange shipping. Then all you would need to do is get it on a pallet and they could handle the rest with the freight company.
 
I have pretty good luck with what said SBFJ60FIG. I did help out by taking the engine to work with me to our shipping and recieving area / loading dock. Saved the buyer some cash. If you have a buddy with a truck or a really good friend that works at a plant or something that has a dock, forklifts etc...

I also noticed MudShip forum. Haven't really looked into it but i know there are websites where you can have folks bid on transporting you parts. May not be a freight company but some private trailer owner looking to make some money on his way home instead of just hauling an empty trailer.

Another option is to sell some items for customer pick-up only. This means they have to be close to your area, and they have to show up with their own cherry picker and trailer.
 
Yeah I've heard of people just seeing if they can pick stuff up to and from where ever on their private trailer. That sounds really appealing and cost-saving too.

I'm guessing UPS might be able to take the Third members for me. I've also heard really good things about DHL for pricing. UPS is pretty darn expensive.

Problem is most people are not close by and they need the motor, trans and transfer case, etc. so the old you pick it up or arrange shipping things makes it harder to ship the stuff out.
 
I used Freight and Shipping, Inc. and they were very professional and extremely helpful. They picked up the engine at my house and everything. Great service! It was $500 to ship an engine from San Diego, CA to Arkansas.

Look into Greyhound. I shipped two doors and a tailgate through them. Their prices blew ups and dhl out of the water.
 
I have used Greyhound too. also as a side benifit.. they will let you show up really any time since the terminals are usually always open. I have shipped some really big body parts with them in the past...

just make sure to call them for a quote and tell them the dimensions. oversized items add to the price of the online quote. don't ask me how i know.
 
I would definitely go greyhound for anything under 6 foot (IIRC they can only ship 4ftx6ft): cheapest I've ever been able to find for big items
 
I honestly don' think there is, but the lady told me that they basically charge $1 a pound to ship it. At least that's what I would told. I would call a station with your dimensions and see if they can do it and how much.
 
Greyhound told me that they won't take anything that can leak oil. Might check on that.

I've heard good reports about Forward Air, and my sister ,who is in the freight management business, recommended them to me a while back.

GreyHound! Hah! I would have never thought of that....well all you have to do is drain all the oil and it won't leak!

I'm gonna go GreyHound on my thirds and the trans too!

put each third in a 5 gallon bucket then they def wont leak and then all you are shipping is 2 5 gal buckets.
 
last summer I bough the contents of a self-storage unit. it was full of electrical motors, BIG circuit breakers, and other stuff.
This is what I have found from experience:
MOST buyers will not believe you when you tell them how much shipping costs..trust me, they won't. I had one guy complain about a dollar difference between what I said, and what he "figured" out.( this was of course, AFTER the item shipped)

Let the buyer take care of it. You can have it on a pallet in the driveway, and let them arrainge pick up. You will lose some buyers, but take my word for it...you'll be much happier when its out of your hair, and three months later someone wont write you a letter demanding a refund because "so-and-so" would have done it cheaper
