You should call Toyota USA directly and check with them if the TSB can be applied to your year and model. If you get confirmation it is the case then you can go back and stick it to the dealer.

No Luck... They said my VIN doesn't have this TSB associated with it. My experience with the transmission has been if I am accelerating and then let off the gas and coast a little then between 1-2 gear apply the gas it kind of jerks. Toyota USA told me that the dealer has to reproduce the issue and that my VIN doesn't have this TSB associated with it. I guess the transmission is expected to behave this way, anyone on here have the same experience then apply the TSB and get smoother shifting afterwards?

I have the same problem in my '16. I had the TSB applied, and it did not help with the 1 to 2 hesitation and shifting after coasting. My $0.02 on this issue is that the truck is shifting to 1 when it should be hanging out in 2. When you press the accelerator, it revs and then shifts abruptly.

Try recreating the same scenario with the 2nd ECT button pressed. It should be drastically better. Now we just need Toyota to issue a fix for this.

I have. Prior to the TSB application, it would hard shift accelerating through all gears and not just when applying the gas after coasting (although it did that, too). It was to the point that I thought I had a faulty transmission until doing some research on this site. I was given the TSB in this thread, took my LC to the dealer who applied the fix and, boom, no more shift shock. It was weird, the place where I bought it didn't know what to make of it so I took it to a local dealer and it wasn't a problem to fix. Maybe take it someplace else?

I did the TSB and it helped a little during coasting but the overall jerking didn’t stop until I put on the Toyos All-Terrain tires.

Bump on this thread.

I bought a 16 with 70k mi. Great shape. Does have rough shifting in 1st and 2nd when up and downshifting. Especially if rapidly accelerating and decelerating.

So far have done the TSB and reprogramming, transmission flush with new fluid. Tried Pedal Commander and that didn’t work and didn’t care for it.

The TSB helped some but it’s still there. Subtle but there. Any other hints or tricks? I searched this thread and forum and can’t find steps beyond what I’ve done. For now just driving around with ECT on and tolerating the little bit that’s still there.

I wonder if the TSB reprogramming was done at all or done correctly? That solved those symptoms in my '17 and you shouldn't have to put up with it. I used to drive around with the ECT always on and after the re-programming I don't need to. I have no idea how to find out if the reprogramming was done or done correctly, but if it wasn't, you wouldn't be the first person to have technician issues at a dealership.

I spoke at length with the service manager. He knew exactly what TSB I was referring to and my receipt mentions it by name. I’m 99% sure it was done but you never know I guess.

I’m going to keep driving it but it may be that this is just how it is. It doesn’t jerk, shock or clunk anymore. Just not as smooth as my wife’s GX. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Btw I’m still in love with it!! My mechanic said it best. It’s a minor annoyance but should still run forever and that’s what I’m looking for.

I’m experiencing a hard/jerky shift from 2nd to 3rd on my ‘21. Started yesterday, and occurred again today, only 600miles. Any known occurrences after the 2017 update?

Both times it occurred after a brief 10 min drive, go into store/restaurant, then hard shifting back home.

The 8 speed is more clunky than the 6 speed - in both down and up shifting. It’s inconsistent at times but have noticed it on my 2020 that now has 8k miles and the other 2 new 21s I drove.

Glad to know it’s not only mine. I’m easy on the throttle; seems to do better if I drive a little more aggressively.

Yes. I think these HD transmissions don’t do well under light load conditions.

What do you mean by clunky?

I’m thinking I may have an issue that I need the dealer to check. No issues in the first 600 miles, but it’s been consistent over the last 100 miles; very repeatable. Occurred several times today.

Cold start is fine, every shift is smooth.
However, once the car is warm, if I shut It off (go into a store) and hop back in for next errand, “hard shift“ from 2nd to 3rd. You can feel it disengage from 2nd, followed by a brief pause, then jerky engagement of 3rd.

I understand more gears on the 8 speed and sometimes evident confusion on downshift, but this is different. Never felt this on a transmission before.

edit: I also played with throttle and heavy, or light, it behaved the same.

Glad you bumped this thread. I have a ‘17 with 82k that’s new to me. I’ve owned it about a month. First two weeks were great—didn’t even know this could be an issue. Then had a drive belt start to squeak and took it in for a tensioner replacement (and new belt). As soon as I left the shop, I immediately noticed all of the issues listed in this thread between 1st and 2nd gear.

Did some research and couldn’t image how a drive belt tensioner might introduce these problems (and neither could the shop). Last week I:

  • Did the TSB Update - helped with coasting a little bit, but overall no change.
  • Transmission fluid change - no help
  • Greased drive shaft - no change
I still love the truck, but this does sour the experience some for me. I drive folks (and sometimes customers with high expectations) around in stop-and-go traffic. They aren’t too pleased when it slams abruptly into 1st gear when coasting to a stop.

Please keep posting updates if anyone finds a solution.

I'd venture a guess this is sample-to-sample variation. I test drove a brand new 2021 that was slamming into 1st from 2nd when coasting/stopping. Very noticeable and annoying. The 2021 I bought does not do that (you can tell it downshifts but it is not objectionable). Or at least has not done in the all 150 miles I put on it (it is waiting for spring now).

I truly hope you don’t run into this issue. Honestly shocked this is an issue considering the cost of the vehicle.

Not a sample to sample variation. It’s a characteristic of how people drive that can exacerbate it. Both of our 2020 200s and all 3 that I test drove do the same thing.

Try slowly coasting to a slow roll, below 10mph, and then lightly hitting the gas. You’ll feel it.

Are you guys who are experiencing this using ECT PWR or ECO setting for the transmission? (I'm assuming the button still exists on the latest model like it does on my 2013).

Does it in both modes.
