Symptom:

Growl and shudder at 60+ mph.
Louder when off throttle

Attempted fixes:

Adjusted driveshaft angle (ie: pinion shims)
Rebuilt rear diff
Drive force balanced all 4 tires

Anyone have any suggestions on the next place to look? or alternately anyone have a suggestion on a shop that can diagnose and fix this problem once and for all?

Otherwise, I'm going 55 MPH everywhere... and that just sucks.

I had a shudder in the steering wheel at 60-65. No growl. More like the beginnings of death wobble. I could slow down or speed up and make it go away but 60 - 65 is where I do most of my highway driving. It sucked. It mysteriously went away when I installed my hard top. Go figure...

Make sure your driveshaft is clocked correctly. Check/lube u joints just to cover your bases but it sounds to me like pinion bearing symptoms. Who rebuilt the diff? Was the pinion bearing replaced?

Hard to pinpoint exactly where the sound comes from.

The guy that rebuit the diff was a local mechanic. Allan - works at Hodge Garage... He's well respected.

All bearings and gears replaced.

Gears? Dude put in new ring & pinion?

If you're around this weekend maybe I can take it for a drive.

Does the sound change if you push the clutch in all the way at 60mph?

Have you checked the fluid levels in your trans and transfer?

Yep - all new.

Absolutely! Sunday morning would probably be best.

Johnny - Sound doesn't change when the clutch goes in.

Have not checked the fluid levels.

if its the 80, center diff lock on , remove rear drive shaft, test. then reinstall do front drive shaft if needed. see if anything changes. if the 40 skip the diff lock and put it in 4wd when you pull the rear DS.

Good call on the fluid check. Include the Ranger OD on that list.
Speaking of which, is there any change when not in OD?
Are there any "klunks" when you apply a lot of torque? (Look for broken trans or motor mount)
Did diff dude also replace rear wheel bearings?
Are the brakes giving a shimmy or vibe at high speed?
Shudder in the whole rig, steering, gear shift?
"Louder when off throttle" ... You really think louder or is there a chance it's simply more detectable without as much engine noise.

Will shoot for Sunday.
