All, I’m building a 2F from an ‘84 FJ60. The mark on the crank is very faint. Is this manufacturing stamp what I should line the dot on the cam up with? There really isn’t any other marks in the crank gear, except this very faint scratch on across from manufacturer stamp.

Thank you,

Mike

You should be looking in the manuals for instructions on how to set it up. I'd say the center punch @ around the 4 o'clock position is the mark. Usually a mark on one gear is set between 2 marks on the other gear. Marks can be a dot, line, hole, or a champered tooth.

Just a gut feeling - the dot tooth goes between the tooth with a hole and the chamfered tooth to the right

Looking more closely the touchmark notch and the hole tooth could easily be the correct set up

Thank you. I have been following the FSM closely. The manufacturer's stamp on the crank gear is set between two teeth, while the knick at 4'oclock is on a tooth. Since the dot on the cam gear is on a tooth, the mark on the crank gear should be between 2 teeth for them to line up as that last pick shows. So, for now, I believe the manufacturer's stamp is the mark on the crank gear. But, I could be wrong. I've got an F engine torn down and I'll check that crank gear. I seem to recall it was very clearly marked there.

Touch mark and hole looks like correct orientation to me. That's why books are necessary for proper repair.

I was on a field problem in Germany. We lost a magneto on one of our 10kW genny's. They sent a new mechanic out. After some time he figures out its a magneto issue. He goes back to garrison and comes back with a mag, proceeds to throw it on. Genny still doesn't run. I check it now has spark. I ask and he says he just bolted it on. What about timing? What about it? I pull the mag off and look at the gears - one has a dot on one tooth the other is a V next to a chamfered tooth. Put the dot in between the V and chamfer - bang genny starts and runs like a champ.

Is that an OEM camgear? If that's the only obvious factory mark I'd have to assume that's the one to align with the crankgear.
I forget if, when you have the two marks aligned, you're at TDC #1 or not. If so, can you somehow guesstimate where the flywheel timing marks would be?

IIRC when the two marks are aligned that it is the #6 cylinder that is at TDC. I'm going from memory and don't have the FSM handy and could be way off.

I just rebuilt an FJ60 2F...

#6 needs to be at TDC on the compression stroke (both valves closed I think?), and then align the match marks as you have them. Crank gear's mark is the "Teq" stamp, cam gear's mark is the dot. Please verify for yourself in the 1981 2F Factory Service Manual found under the "Resources" tab at the top of your screen.

Not sure if you need any additional parts, but I have a used set of timing gears I'd let go of. I also make a reproduction of the brass timing gear oil squirter that is applicable to all F-family motors from 1958-1990.
