Sequoia vs 100 series

The Sequoia is the same underneath as a GX470. Puny suspension, brakes, and little teeny weeny air springs in the back. No wonder they lose steering racks...it's the same rack as a Tacoma. They do have nice big interiors but otherwise 100s are in a completely different league.

I don't think that's correct. They have always shared more with the Tundra chassis where the GX has always shared more with the 4runner chassis.

@Nay You're saying replace both axles, steering and SAS the thing. And you're saying the Sequoia has a better wheelbase (6" longer) and it has everything better tucked up underneath than a 100. Drivetrain is virtually the same between the 100 and Sequoia.

So how is the longer sequoia wheelbase better when you SAS it you can just extend the 100 wheelbase 6"+ and reduce the approach and departure angles?

Better clearance? This is the Sequoia.... you can see the relation of the fuel tank and transmission crossmember to the frame.

This is the 100. The fuel tank and crossmember certainly are higher up in relation to the frame.

But maybe the Sequoia frame just has higher clearance than the 100 and the fuel tank and crossmember are the same height as the 100. The 100 frame is certainly more rigid than the Sequoia. Let's just compare the rear lower control arm mounting bolts. Looks like the mounting bolt is right under the fuel tank.... but barely.

This is the 100, and it looks like the bolts are either the same height or lower than the Sequoia.

Are you seeing something different?
In practice, I’ve been out enough with Sequoia on 37’s, including on just the stock front gear, to see the clearance difference. Rockers are high up, less prone to driveshaft damage (at least with the 8.4). We’ve put them side by side and at the door the Sequoia has as much clearance on 3.5” of lift and 37’s as I have on 5.5 with 38’s. Notice the lack of sliders. How the front end gets up something has more than a little bit of influence on how the rest of it is going to clear.

I came home with this. All of them suffer terribly the low hanging frame mount for the rear control arms on ledge obstacles. I have sliders on my mounts, but still. I also don’t listen to my spotters very well.

I am often Singing the Song of the Driveshafts spinning on ledges. That tree on the right is missing the requisite bark from people who just won’t give up.

Here’s the Jeep, same wheelbase as the Sequoia. We thought he was going to get there and walk it once it was in the right position with the extra wheelbase over my 80, got completely stuffed.

This isn’t Sequoia > Hundy. Any IFS truck is going to need a gob of work. If we are talking 2.5” and stock stuff, there are replacement lower arms that fix the ball joint problem. I had a basic OME kit on it with 34” tires before my son inherited it and proceeded to test all theories.

On a budget, if you have to buy the rig as cheap as possible but still be nice for family use, want it to last (drivetrain), then yea, the 1st gen Sequoia is a baller fun rig and might step up and embarrass some bought not built types.

Anyway, hope this thread is more than now than the first time around. It’s just fiction without pics. :hillbilly:

I don't think that's correct. They have always shared more with the Tundra chassis where the GX has always shared more with the 4runner chassis.
You are right in that the Tundra is very similar to them all. Tundra, Sequoia, GX470, 4Runner, Tacoma, Prado all really very similar. 6 lug hubs, puny steering racks, smaller rear end, etc. The Sequoia has the same air suspension as the GX470 also.

My sister’s ex has a sequoia, he claimed it was the Toyota version of an LX. Is that true?
Obviously, that’s the reason that he’s an “ex”…
He wasn’t terribly smart, or he was full of 💩
😁
