I thought they did NOT share the same engine... similar but thought the LC engine was built a little better.

Sequoia and Tundra 4.7L engines were built in the US. The LC and LX (and 4Runner) 4.7L engines were built in Japan.

They also share the "same" transmissions, but the sequioa/tundra have part-time transfer cases where the LC/LX/4R has a full-time case. Otherwise, there are very few interchangable parts other than what you might find on the engine and transmission.

Some forged rods, some cast rods, depends on who you ask. I think the consensus is it's the same motor but the Japanese built versions have superior forged rods while the US market Sequoia/Tundra have the cast rods that are inferior and can fail when blown on hard enough.

I concur.

The LC was built for world-wide abuse. The LX and 4R got the same engine/trans/XF by default since they were all built in Japan and used the same suppliers.

The Tundra and Sequoia are built specifically for the US market - which is much less stringent on the need for durability because 99.99% of the time they will be on the pavement and not offroad here.

Therefore, the Japanese drivetrains are built to a different specification than the cheaper US counterpart. The US-made 4.7L is still a great engine, but it's NOT the same as the original world-spec engine.

Seems pretty vivid to me that the Toyota quality dipped a bit when they started putting them together in the US.

When I had a 2004 V8 4runner I researched this. The 5 speed transmission in the 4runner has some nylon parts that in the 100 series are steel. There were some other part differences but I can't remember? I do remember that the 100 series is built to last and the 4runner is built to sell in large volumes. Makes sense that it might also be the same with the Sequoia?? Just buy the LC/LX and you know you have the beast!!

The LX/LC are definitely a different species than the 4runner and Sequoia. No comparison.

Before bashing too much on the 4R... 4G and 5G 4R are 120/150 series Land Cruiser Prados. Not twins but cousins. High quality rigs.

Yes you are correct, but both share the same 2UZ motor, the sequoia 2wd model has the same tranny in the 96 ls400 and previa which i found interesting. Yet the sequoia and previa call for dexron tranny fluid while the ls4 calls for type4? hmmmm
