separating half shaft "short shafts"

OK, starting my '74 FJ40 to BJ60 disk brake assemblys swap,..everythings gone really smoothe except I am at the point where I need to separate my old coarse spline (short shaft) from the axle, does this just pull apart? I read somewhere about the "old drop in the pipe trick" is this how you do it? I can see there isn't reall any safe place to hit, and it doesn't appear to be held in anywhere. Thankyou OJAIFJ40

i put them in a vice upside down and whack them with a big brass hammer or you can try the search function as this was covered on here before good luck

Hi Guy's, Yea, I was awake most of the night with my mind stirring, and read all of Guppies build again, and he was a little sparse on how he got them out, but pretty clear on how his wife helped him get them back in,! Funny how it helps to read a build over again, I looked up the MARK Tack WELD method of re-install, and ki nd of l;ike the idea, I will post asking your advice on doing it to mine. Thanks again, I dropped the complete assembly down my sewer pipe, and it didn't do ANYTHING !!!!
I AM by the way the guy from Ojai that plans to install TBI, like you did COOLERMAN, (just havent gotten around to it) But I have ALL the parts,

I have a slick trick for re-installing the inner to the birf. I use a zip tie to compress the snap ring then tap the inner into the birf, the zip tie slides up the shaft and you can cut it off.
Works slicker than owl snot.

Hi All:

O.K. - are you speaking of separating the CV ("Birfield") joint from the front axle shaft?

If so, yes you can use the "drop in a pipe" trick. What I do is lay the Birf/'shaft combo on the floor, put my foot on the axle shaft, then whack the open end of the "bell" of the Birfield with a BFH. The Birf will pop-off after a whack or two.

What I do is lay the Birf/'shaft combo on the floor, put my foot on the axle shaft, then whack the open end of the "bell" of the Birfield with a BFH. The Birf will pop-off after a whack or two.

Metal BFH? You're going to crack the edge of a birf someday.

For the pipe trick to work, use a metal pipe just big enough to fit around the axle shaft. It'll pop right out. If you've got a big sturdy vice you can set it just bigger than the shaft and do it there. I've used PVC, but you really have to wonk on it.

I;ve used the pipe method for the removal and the ziptie method for the reinstall - worked great and I didn't spend a lot of time on either.

I used the pipe method for removal. It works. I had never tried it before and it worked fine for me. Be sure to put a board under the pipe so the spline end of the inner lands on something soft when it falls down the pipe.

For reinstall, I used the "two helpers and 5 screwdrivers and lots of grumbled expletives" method. I wish I had known about the zip tie method. That sounds slick.

Yup, took me longer to hunt down the zip ties than it did to get the axles back together.
