Seems my LX has automatic emergency braking...

... and I thought it didn't?

Wasn't paying as much attention as I should have the other day, traffic in front of me abruptly slowed down and I was late on the brake pedal, but still applied it. I applied it progressively (as I always do), and did not even get half way through the pedal travel before the vehicle took over. The pedal seemingly went to the floor without my foot, both front seat belts tightened, tires squealed. Stopped with several meters worth of room.

Now I know this behaviour can happen when you're on cruise control, but I was not using cruise.

What gives? Anyone know more about it?

Normal. It is surprising the first time one experiences it.

Ahhh, found it in the owners manual, page 355: https://drivers.lexus.com/t3Portal/document/om-s/OM60L21U/pdf/OM60L21U.pdf :

When the radar sensor detects possibility of a frontal collision, the pre-collision systems such as the brakes and seat belts are automatically engaged
to lessen impact as well as vehicle damage.

■ Pre-collision seat belts (front seats only)
If the pre-collision sensor detects that a collision is unavoidable, the pre-collision system will retract the seat belt before the collision occurs.
The same will happen if the driver makes an emergency braking or loses
control of the vehicle. (P. 94)
However, when the VSC system is disabled, the system will not operate in
the event of skidding.

■ Pre-collision brake assist
When there is a high possibility of a frontal collision, the system applies
greater braking force
in relation to how strongly the brake pedal is
depressed.

■ AVS control
When the system determines that there is a high possibility of a frontal collision, the AVS optimizes the damping effect. (P. 329

Looks like the radar sensor is active regardless of whether cruise control is engaged. That's new to me, and good to know. "The system applies greater braking force" is exactly what happened. Cool!

Although it sounds like some manual brake application would be required before the system takes over. Am I understanding that correctly? If so, then it's not a full-on automatic braking setup, but rather an assistant system that applies more brake than you did.

My 2013 does it...I therefore watch my butt especially with snow and/or ice on the road.

My 07 4Runner has it. Stock. It’s not new technology but surprises folks all the time. Scared the s*** out of my wife on the highway one day.

Exactly!

Vehicle doesn’t need need radar to have emergency braking and seatbelt tensioner. It has saved my bacon a few times. Amazing Dow fast this fat girl can slow down.

My understanding is one thing the vehicle electronics keep track of, even without radar, is how quickly the driver lifts off the throttle and apply the brakes, and how aggressive that brake application is.

With the appropriate sensors and logic it is pretty easy to idwntify what is out of the ordinary and supplement braking, as well as trigger seatbelt pretensioners, etc.

Some 13 LXs don’t even have the radar cruise but can still get agro with the brakes when the right conditions are met.

Yes, I believe this is true. I’ve had the “break assist” kick in when breaking hard for a red light with nothing in front of me. Break assist activation is usually quickly followed by a laser WTF glare from my wife.

On my '03, a quick stab at the brake pedal intended to be moderate braking for a deer spotted ahead, would be all-out braking. It felt like it shifted in to reverse. And I only wanted moderate braking, because there was a loaded gravel truck close behind me.

On my '21, yes auto braking. I get the red BRAKE screen in the center of the dash a micro-second-warning prior.

So if I actually need to bash into another vehicle to protect someone, am I instead going to safely brake to a stop? I notice I can override the braking my cruise control does when I step on the gas, not sure if the auto-brake can be overridden.

What years have this? I have an 08.

Does this “seem to keep happening” when she is putting lipstick on in the mirror?

Looks like anything 2015 around.

But the earlye version had sometimes problems on other brands as i remind that a friend had the first A-Class AMG and sometimes the car hit the brakes when some branches hanging low into the street. In my company car (Ford Focus Turnier) the pre-collision alert/brake works pretty fine but ok compared to my LC (also 2008 like yours) this car is a spaceship. Whenever I have not used the company car for a longer period of time (e.g. on vacation), the car tends to stall at the first start. Simply because the clutch is as light as a feather compared to my Toyota road tractor. 😅

The entire PCS system can be bypassed by holding the radar-distance config button for a few seconds.

This happened to me today. Came to a screeching halt at a stoplight. I think we were actually skidding at the end, and it didn't feel like the antilock brakes kicked in. Maybe the modulation was so fast and effective I didn't feel it. Make me worry a little if it happens on a slick, wet or icy road though.

I'll look for that button when I get back in town.

What years? This doesn’t seem to work on my 13.
