I do wonder, from that whole incident--is car theft not a problem in Japan? Why didn't Toyota put in a better lock system? Are the Japanese that law-abiding, in Japan, that you don't need more than about five different key patterns for the early nineties? I swear, I've seen people (since the theft) get into Toyotas, using keys from other Toyotas, about a dozen times. Helped out one guy, myself--Tried my key, and it fit.

My dad went to Japan on business several years ago. They flew into Tokyo and took the "subway" to their hotel. When they were checking in one of his co-workers realized he had left his $2000 digital camera setting on the seat of the train. The man at the desk of the hotel said "Don't worry, go back tomorrow, it will be there" as the subway had already closed. Sure enough, he went back the next morning and there it was, setting on the seat. Point is, people are AFRAID to steel stuff in Japan due to the penalties so it realy isn't much of an issue.

As far as the barinuts, I had those on all the sets of IPF's I've had and they will be on all my nice lights from now on. They may not be the perfect solution, but they are pretty good. I dont' know if I would put locktite on them though because when they are really tight it is a little hard to break them loose because the little keys like to slip off. I would think locktite would complicate this season quite a bit.

another variation on the above theme:

Part # for the ANTI-THEFT NUTS is #061107 - $24.00

I'm not sure if people don't steal because of the punishment being severe which I don't think they are, but...

Anyway, another example...
I once left a camcorder in the windowsill(sp) of a train restroom with it on, facing the urinals (I know, I know what this might sound like, especially after the comments I made in "Chat" section, but that's not what I was doing. I had just been recording and forgot to turn it off before setting it down. ;) )

Anyway, I got done with peeing and took off w/o the camcorder. Well it took me a while to realize (til my wife pointed out anyway...) that I had left the camcorder and when I ran franticlly(sp) to the restroom, lo and behold, it was still sitting there where I had left it. I had watched the "footage" after getting home (no, it did not contain anything obsene(sp) it was clear that although they were curious as to why the camcorder was sitting where it was, nobody made an attempt to take it.

Now I'm not saying that if you leave anything, anywhere, at anytime, you will find it there later. But chances are good, much better than they are in the US.

I did find a fake Vuitton wallet with $220 in it and chose not to leave it there in a parking lot by my house last year, but turned it in. I was surprised when I went to the police after 6 mos to see if the victim(?) had picked it up and he hadn't. I didn't complain when the police gave me the wallet, with the money in it!

Like it is everywhere else (I'm assuming) that it is getting worse here, too, Bummer!

heck if you weld on the lights..........the thiefs will just take the whole bumper..........at least thats what they did to me............bumpers now tack welded on........

Sounds like we've been victims of some of the same people, Landpimp... Did your rig wind up abandoned in Kent like mine did?

I'm thinking I'm gonna be crawling under the truck with a welder in hand, once I get the sliders and rear bumper mounted (first, I gotta come up with the cash to pay for them, though). I've decided I'm going to make the bastards at least work for it, if they're going to steal it.

no mine was striped when it was at a trany shop in Paulsbo, took the bumper, lights, rack ect ect. But after some heated conversatons the shop paid up, seeing how it was someone who worked for them who took all the s***.

I feel bad that we live in world where you guys have to weld on parts to keep them from getting stolen. I suppose you all have wheel locks too? I have a set of factory Toyota wheel locks for cone type application I would give to someone who lives in one of the crime laden parts of the country. Come to think of it the bigger lights could probably be fastened with wheel locks. My old Bosch Ralleye's could have used a LC sized bolt. I'm just bolting my Hellas on. I'm not too concerned about theft where I live. And when I'm on the road I'm too poor to stay in a hotel. So I sleep in the rig or a tent so I'm guarding my 80. Also, we have three large dogs that are sort of deterant.

Yep, get some of the barri nuts. They are next to impossible to take off without the tool.

How do you guys secure your aux. lights? I just bought a pair of Lightforce and am afraid they are going to be stolen.

It's getto and somewhat permanent, but you could spot weld the bottom of the nut. I'd get the locking nuts biff.

Like Beowolf, I like the JB Weld Epoxy putty. Hard as steel and a wrench won't take it off. When the mounts need to come off, a dremel or angle grinder will do the trick. If they want to go to the trouble of bringing a portable sawzall or cordless dremel, they are more desperate than smart. Most of the punks around NorCal hit blinged out rigs like Endless'.

i saw a documentry set in japan and an expensive camera was left i think in Tokio on sed of a roadway this was vidioed and it showed poeple looking at the camera and thenjust passing by, it was left for a day or two and not touched at all as theft is very rare in Japan and I think cosidered shamful, a pity that was not the case here!

I haven't come across any cameras, but I've found a wallet and I've also found a watch on a train once. I've turned them both in I got the wallet/money a few months later because the owner never showed up. I've turned the watch in to the stationmaster. I'm sure either the owner showed up and got it back or it still is sitting in their lost-and-found box.

But things are not same as defore. Theft is very common these days, although maybe not as bad in other parts of the world, it's getting to be a concern. But I still hear stories by people that were chased after by shop clerks to because they short changed them and wanted to give you additional (correct) amount.
