Any thoughts on the best place to secure a 35" spare either in the trunk or on the roof? I have lots of tie down straps and have used the bracket for the 3rd seat and the grab handle above that--but on especially hard jolts the tire can hit the driver´s side rear window. I don't really have room to lay it down in the back becuase I have all my recovery gear back there(it is in boxes with tie downs holding down the boxes) I have no problem putting the tire on the roof--I am tall and can easily put it up there but I am concerned about raising my center of gravity. In the local Mountains July-Oct is monsoon season and many of the roads are washed out making for many off camber situations with lots of mud. I have about 3.5" of lift with 35's. Unless somebody has a bright idea I think I will just stand it up and secure it to the 3rd seat bracket/grab handle and put some card board on the rear driver window.

throw it in the back if ya got room....but if ya never come close to flipping it toss it on the roof...i know if i would have had my big ass tire on the roof of my truck i would have rolled it wayyyy easier...

Roof would be my first choice, but given your concerns about having a high center of gravity, I'd put it inside, as you described, but would pad with an old blanket rather than with cardboard. Stuff some old blankets and/or towels between the tire and the glass and secure it down.

If you have a Bullbar up front... anyway to mount it to that, and not obstruct view to much? I would say the hood like some rovers, but I don't think you can see over it very well and the hood wouldn't support it alone.
Just some ideas

What I did on my '97 was to have the tire vertical in the back against the driver's side, put the tire right where the 3rd row driver's-side seat would be. 2 cinch straps that ran from the 3rd row seat driver's side bracket through the rim to the spots in the floor where that 3rd row driver's side seat would latch. You have to get the straps very tight, but that's not as hard as you think, climb up in there and get the straps as tight as you can, then when up in there by the tire, try to push the tire out (like trying to roll it out), it ofcourse won't roll because it's strapped, but the rear-most strap will have some slack then, so yank on that strap as you're doing this...then try to roll the tire forward, pull any slack out of that strap. It sounds cheesy, but you can get those straps TIGHT, and leave them for months, wheeling all over and the tire will never budge, never do anything, pretty good setup I thought, and it'll come out in about 5 seconds too. If doing that, put something like old carpet or wood under the tire though, since you are securing it down really tight, whatever your tread pattern on the tire is, you will ingrain that into the carpet.. :D

Good Luck...that method really did work well, although the rim starts to cut the straps some, but nothing more than some frayed parts, never had it cut all the way through a strap.

I asked a similar question not too long ago - where to store the spare until I put on the rear bumper tire / carrier down the road.

The concensus was not to put it on the roof.

I never convinced myself there was a good reason NOT to put it on the roof (including COG and off camber situtations) and did so.

Been there about 3 weeks and probably will stay that way when I go from stock to 34's with OME lift.

I've been on the trails twice since then and everything is OK so far. To me, it was the best option at the time.

Spare location

Thanks guys--I think I am going to do a combo of Norcaldougs and Marks ideas. I have come close to rolling it--two guys had to stand on the passenger side sliders so I could reverse out of the situation--I was scared but I reached over and locked the door! Thanks again

Jason

This Christmas I need to decide between a rear bumper or an M12000+ ;)

Still running a stock tire? Wait until you find out how much heavier a 34" off road tire is.

Still running stock height? Wait until you jack the rig up 3-4" and have a higher COG, then add all that additional weight to the top.

Flippy tippy.

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. Works for now and and when I make the changes in a few weeks, I'll go back to the drawing board...

Don't want flippy tippy!! :D
