I am not sure if I am ready to jump to drawers yet. Both due to cost, weight and (somewhat) permanence so I am looking for some sort of secure storage for the rear of my 200.

Basically, I want a lock-box that I can secure behind the second row that will cause thieves a delay in getting into.

I have been looking everywhere and the closest I can find is Alubox. But I don’t think those lock down from the inside. So somebody could just cut any tie downs and make off with the whole box.

Searching on this forum, most secure boxes discussed are for guns. I’m thinking something bigger. A drone and some camera equipment (and perhaps a gun).

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Window tint and personal articles insurance.

Unless you’re willing to plop down $$ on something custom or in the trunk (drawers), there’s nothing else out there.

One of the members has a horizontal (left to right)!two layer aluminum box installed. Don’t recall their handle at the moment.

@rcork had a repurposed gun drawer I believe, it was about 1.5x the size of a normal slide out drawer. Don't remember the brand, but he might be able to tell you.

The generic sized pickup truck boxes you can buy at the hardware store fit perfectly behind the 3rd row. Drill holes through the bottom of it and you can bolt them into the same holes that hold the tie downs.

The SecureIt FastBox is big enough for large DSLR, Maveric-sized drone, etc. You could easily put in deviders to keep things from moving around.

It's not Fort Knox but any means but most vehicle thefts are smash-and-grab and this would definitely take those items out of play. And it has both a six-digit combo as well as a key option, so no need to keep extra keys on your keyring or in your front pocket.. With the door opening outward you could still stack whatever on top and have it be accessible.

I have it in the Ram up on top of a shelf system at the front of the bed.

I use a Pelican case for camera and drone equipment. They are filled with pre-Sliced foam to customize for your stuff, have reinforced padlock holes, come in lots of sizes, and could be bolted down to one of the cargo ring bolt holes.

Safest lock box is the one thieves can’t see
Datk tinting massively helps this

Beyond that…
How large $ what shape item do you want to secure?

Have a lookat my surprosibgly secure, mostly invisible tail-gate storage. Key there is making it disappear, plus its locks are not easily defeated. Even the screws will not get in unless the nuts are held in place i side.

All,
Thank you for all of the suggestions! These were exactly what I was looking for.

Some questions:
@highfructose - when you say “bolt down,” are you attaching to the loops in the tie-downs or are you removing the bolts and using those threads.
And not to hijack my own thread - but is that a canister of fuel you carry on the inside the vehicle?

@Oregon LC - how is that safe bolted down? Or is it just strapped down?

@Sandroad - I like the pelican case suggestion. It would still be useful should I ever step up and get a full-on drawer system.

@Markuson - I searched through your old posts and couldn’t find the one with your tail-gate solution. Could you point it out?
But to answer your question about the size; it would be several dslr lenses (the largest at about a foot long and 6” diameter.) and a drone (call it 10” x 5” x 6”). And other small assorted electronics like gps and UE speakers.

All,
I don’t mean to imply I’m traveling with anything particularly valuable. I’m not. For me, the most valuable part of all of this is the actual trip itself and having my gear stolen would sure put a damper on the trip.
And I know none of these are Fort Knox. I’m just trying to reduce the odds by presenting a delay to would-be-theives.
These days, with so many hotels insisting on the only parking being valets, part of my worry is the valets rummaging through my stuff in the wee hours.

In my case it's bolted through the front of the Summit with four grade 8 bolts and nylok nuts on the inside. So you only get spin without a backer on the inside of the box. It's also bolted to the shelf system below.

It's just a metal box so you can drill through it and secure it wherever/however you'd like. If you used it as the base of a drawer system it could be secured to the floor as well as being completely out of sight until the tailgate is open.

Old thread but I installed a Tuffy Security box in the back. I used a strip of steel under the cargo mat with two bolts sticking up through the mat and into the storage box, you can't see the mounting when installed. Works well for storing laptops and anything else, top door. The unit is well built.
