That is why you weld plates to the sides as in the pics this will stop the the frame from splitting under stress.

This pic looks familiar ;)

My stretch didn't quite end up the way I designed it in this pic. That why you leave it to the pro's sometimes.

Just to Compare:

FJ62:
Overall Length 4750 mm = 187.0079"
Wheelbase 2730 mm = 107.4803"

FZJ79
Overall Length 5095 mm = 200.5906"
Wheelbase 3180 mm = 125.1969"

So, the FZJ79 is 13.5827" longer overall than a donor 62 series and has a 17.7166" longer wheel base. So, adding 10" to the frame and with using 8" longer FZJ79 rear springs it looks almost spot on? Or am I missing something?

With all of the information provided, I'm beginning to understand.

FJ 62 Wheelbase 2730 mm = 107.4803"

If you use the HZJ79 springs you already have to move the rear hanger back 8.5". This moves your rear axle back 8.5".

FJ62:
Overall Length 4750 mm = 187.0079"
Wheelbase 2730 mm = 107.5" + 8.5" = 116"

You can flip you front springs and get about 2" so now you would be at 10.5" longer between the axles than stock.

FJ 62 Wheelbase 2730 mm = 107.5" + 8.5" + 2" = 118"

Looks like you need an additional 7" frame stretch on top of that to achieve your goal.

FZJ79
Wheelbase 3180 mm = 125.1969"

The overall length of the FZJ 79 at approx 17' is a bit impressive.

I would do the spring flip if it placed the front tires in the front wheel wells and not too far forward as to look funny.

What to people use for steel when stretching a frame? C-channel, or square tubing? From the picture of the truck being built by Proffitt's it looks like they are using C-channel. I assume the back of the open portion of the "C" would have a plate welded there as well?

As this build will happen over a year or so, if anyone is shortening a 62 series frame and wants to part with a 12" section I could use it.

Dont be to concerned with over all length as to wheel base which is the main objective it is easy to add an extension to the rear frame for the rear box mounts,if you look around you should be able to find someone who is *crapping out a 60 with rusty ends and pick it up for next to nothing or free for a middle cut.
when you join the sections it is best to stick weld it unless you have a good wire feed welder not a 110V hobby version you want good penetration on those welds and make sure to add the side plate or plates for structural reinforcement.

If you do the welding use a 220V and grind a valley at the seam for the best penetration, I'd also preheat the section and go slowly with cooling breaks so that you don't warp the frame.

The welding will be left to a professional. The prep will be to grind clean, bevel, and then weld. Proffitt's sells a frame extension kit specifically for putting the FJ79 body onto the 60/62 series frame. When the time comes I will consult with them (as they have done this before) as to where to cut and just how much section to add.

Updates??? My learning, need more info...tanks
