OK, here is the deal. I have a FJ60 front axle that I am putting under my Mini. I also have a custom widening spacer that bolts to an IFS hub. The gentleman that desinged the spacer intended it to use '78 LC rotor. He indicated that he believed these were vented rotors. Others have told me different. He also said that he thought the vintage range for the '78 rotor ran from '78-'81. I was able to find out that '81's are vented.

Here are the questions:

1) Is it correct that '78-81 rotors bolt onto the hud without the wheel studs passing through them?
2) Is the depth of the rotor from mounting surface to the braking surface the same from '78-81? ie. Are they interchangeable?
3) Is the depth of the rotor from mounting surface to the braking surface the same from the '78-'81 LC to a FJ60? I am aware that the wheel studs pass through the Fj60 rotor but I may be able to work with this.

I have more questions but forgot. Maybe these will cover it... :grinpimp:

Your help is greatly appreciatted.

My 78 had vented Rotors that bolted to the hub. The wheel studs do not pass through the Rotor.

#1- Yes.

The rest:

The spacing on the hub/rotor is identical between the two different styles. The way the rotor is retained to the hub is the only thing that changed. You would be able to use a rotor and hub assembly from a 1985 FJ-60 on a 1978 FJ40 without any issues.

Hope that helps!

Good luck!

OK...after some hunting and a tip from Woody, I found that the LC rotor change from a bolt-on style to a stud-through style in 1980. This is the same rotor as a FJ60. Here is the kicker, at rockauto.com, the '79 rotor (Allsafe 9820RGS) runs $52.89 while the '80 rotor (Allsafe 9838RGS) runs $10.61. WTF? Is there really that much demand for LC rotors?

Steve,

This is good info. I think I am going to use the (2) bolt holes in the FJ60 rotor to locate it to the spacer and then transfer the FJ60 pattern onto the spacer. Then drill and tap the spacer for M14 bolts. Done...I think?

8/80+ fj40, 60, 62 the same..........if I recall and those have the 2 bolts and 6 studs holding them on. These are cheaper because they were used on alot more rigs then the others

Damn, no wonder my FJ60 rotors didn't seem quite right on my '79 40 hubs.

Gonna hafta round up some 60 hubs so I can run the $10 rotors.

This is exactly what I found out when I did my minitruck FDB with donor parts from a 79 mini. All Autozone rotors irregardless of year had the larger holes for the studs to go through the hub and rotor. Napa online was the same also. Too bad as their prices were ~$30 each. I had to end up going to Toy to get the correct rotors at $90/each...ouch.

FJ60 and minitruck (solid axle) wheel hubs are the same

What out for Advanced Auto!!!

I ordered my '78 rotors through them this week(Wearever # YH141510 or Bendix # 141510). What I recieved was the same as a 60 rotor. I had them check the year '76-89 and all of them called for the same part number. When I explained to the cashier that they had the wrong number loaded into their system, all I recieved was a "deer in the headlights" look. The best explaination they could give me was that these rotors must be for that model year with rear disk brakes? WTF? Is there such a domestic model? They came to the conclusion that the other part number specified for front disk/rear drum (Bendix # 145210) must be the correct one. This is the point that I asked them to credit my card and left. Dumbass'!

Anybody here have the correct part number for a '76-'78 LC front brake rotor? I am getting a bit desperate now.

You apparently did not read my earlier post and link in it. I covered all of this. Do you like reinventing the wheel?
Be nice, this is partially my fault..

:flipoff2:

here is the needed part #'s

cruiserbrett,
Thanks for clearing this up. You definitely know your s***.

.................................................. ..................................

EDIT: 2/17/05 correct rotor info

If I can add further clarification for vented rotor upgrade to minitruck to FJ40 front disc brake conversion:

If you have a 79-80 minitruck hubs use 76-80 FJ40 rotors #43512-6001. Both 79-80 mini & 76-80 FJ40 use same hubs.

If you have 81-85 minitruck hubs use 81-83 FJ40 rotors #43512-6010.

Advance auto calls for same rotor (Bendix 141510) for all years FJ40 which is wrong! This is the 81-83 style with (6) larger 15.1mm holes

NAPA rotor numbers:
77 LC...........85678 (6 bolt holes)
86 FJ60................85799 (6 studs, & 2 bolts)
86 FJ60 (chinese rotors) 48-85799...cheap, use at own risk?

I have not laid eyes on these to confirm, but the online photo look correct.

Apparently not. As it was posted 2 minutes earlier than my last post, I was probably still writing when you pressed the submit button. I guess I am going to have to brush up on my ESP skills. I'm getting a little rusty with them.

BTW- I have re-invented the wheel! It is absolutely astounding. It works on the same principals as the origonal but mine is rectangular. :flipoff2:

Thanks Yoda. I will try Napa tomorrow. I am confident that they will be a bit more knowledgable than the goobers at Advanced.

Wow, the 85678's are $91.49 each. That's within a few $$ of what the dealer wants for OE.

I ended up ordering Allsafe 9820RGS from rockauto.com for $52.89/ea. I hope to see them tomorrow. The website specified that they have 6 bolts holes(fingers crossed).

Dgangle-shhh please. You’re giving me a headache.
