I have "2nd Gen" 4Runner CV axles in the Gnewt.

What the heck does that mean? What years are "2nd Generation" 4Runners?

Are the axles in 2nd gen 4Runners different than 1st gen? 3rd gen?

If I'm gonna run these things, I guess I better learn about them!

Thanks!

(Oh, and they're about twice as beefy as the stock CV axles in a Suzuki Sidekick, so these shouldn't break, even on 33's.)

First Gen went from 84-89. IFS came out in 86. The CV's are interchangeable from first to second gen. I have one of each in my 91 and they are the same. 2nd gen ran thru 1995. Dunno about 3rd gens.

CV's are notorious for breaking off road. But, my lasted w/ no issues thru the Rubicon, 33's and front locker. With dual xfer cases, maybe not. I carry spares. There is also a mod to the front dif, basically replacing the studs with bolts so you can swap them w/out having to loosen a ball joint and drop the knuckle..search on offroad.com.

So anywhere from 86 through 95 is fine. Great!
I have bolts. It was no small feat to squeeze 4Runner axles in a Sidekick - they're longer than Kick axles. I have custom flanges on the diff, with bolts, and "spacers" on the hubs, that move the lock-outs a bit farther out. Gotta get some pics of this some day!
