School me: "best" starting point Tacoma

I think you meant to title this, which 3rd gen Tacoma should I get?

Most people are voting second gen because when it comes down to it, they drive more like a truck than a mini van with the 4.0L and dont necessarily have the saving-gas-is-my-reason-in-life transmission.

Most like the Offroad because you get the better suspension and offroad goodies, but also the black fender flares / different look. Others just HAVE to have that hood scoop. You said you want to do challenging offroad trails - No reason in the world not to at least get a locker and ATRAC. They are insanely useful tools that trucks without them (stock for stock) just absolutely cannot keep up. You shouldnt be the guy out there bumping ledges and giving it hell because your truck cannot simply apply a little bit of brake power to the slipping wheel like all the TRD OR trucks before you.

I'd have no trouble adding an ARB locker. Whatever I end up with will end up being locked one way or another.
