I have a scary klanking sound can mng from my motor. I replaced my thermostat last week and everything was fine. Now today, I here a clank, clank, clank coming from the motor. My son was helping me and, when we were putting the housing back on, he dropped the socket. We couldn't find it right away but figure it was on the skid plate somewhere. We never found the socket. Dobyou think it's in the water pump?

Seems likely. I’d take that housing off and check before running it anymore. Although before you do that, have another careful search for the socket outside. Also check for anything left loose.

Losing a socket inside the water pump sounds like a hard thing to do. Have you checked the fan shroud? It could be lodged in there and the fan hitting it? Although that wouldn't be a metal on metal sound.
