Ready to put a Scangauge in the LX470....but having a hard time deciding where to put it. It will be pretty much a permanent fixture.

I don't want to dash or windshield mount it....as it would be exposed to the hot Texas sun and also invite theft.

It doesn't have to be right in my line of sight, but does need to be someplace where I can look at it at a glance and not have to take my eyes off the road for too long.

It was easy to find a spot in my 80 series...but the LX is quite different.

Thank You in advance,

Flint.

I have the ash tray puled out a bit and it is rubber-banded to the top....it is permanent for me lol

Here you go

That's a nice pic....but I can't really tell where or how it is mounted?

Behind the steering wheel?

It looks like it is mounted right behind the steering wheel with velcro....

Ive had mine mounted in the upper left corner of the windshield for 2 yrs. Because of the shade strip, you cant really see it from outside, and the heat of summer hasnt been an issue.

Line of sight mounting is good for keeping your eyes up and forward on the road vs glancing down to read the guage.

Ash tray pulled out. Drilled a small hole in the back of the ash tray to feed the data cable and connector through. Coiled up the remainder of the cable and wedged it under the console. The ScanGauge just sits there, no additional means necessary to attach it.

That's where mine is - but I can't take credit - either @Dwight S or someone else on mud posted it before and I thought it was a slick location....

I velcroed mine behind the steering wheel too. Seems to be the best spot to glance at the readings.

It will interfere with the tilt wheel if it's mounted too close to the dash.

Agree, its a handy spot. Just don't like the 'scabbed on' look of it there and the steering column both tilts and telescopes each time the vehicle is started or turned off. I know that feature can be disabled....but my wife likes it.

Huh......

Now that's not as bad as I would have imagined. What holds it in place (suction type windshield mount)?

One of those steelies- sticky tape/ glue combo to windshield. Glue is removeable type for trim pcs. If you go this route, ive got some install tips to suggest.

Yes, Please. Let's hear it. Kind of like that spot. Can just run the cable up the A-pillar. Did you use the 90° type OBD II connector? I'm guessing 6' of cable is enough?

I used the OBD connector and wire that came with my Scanguage. One annoyance with scanguage is no data port on the left side of the unit- where you would want to connect out of the A pillar.

Ok- the steelie thing is h e a v y, and the stainless surface is slippery so in stock form the guage will slide down on the ball.

Mod 1. Take some sandpaper and rough up the stainless ball, and the magnetic donut. This creates enough friction to hold the gauge where ever you point it- even in rough terrain.

Mod 2: Use glue on the magnetic donut base to your scanguage, and the steelie to the window. I used this locktite product, but 3M is similar in case you find one or the other first.

Note: with this location, the sun visor will interfere with the guage if folded to the windshield. Test fit the steelie with gauge attached to your preferred spot before you glue. Trace a small circle around the base with a marker or tape so you remeber optimal placement. Glue it on and use some painters tape to hold the steelie in place till it dries. Dont mount the guage until the windshield mount has dried overnight.

^^^^^^^ Excellent. Thank You for taking the time to map that out for us.

Since this was on sale on Woot the other day and I saw a few others picked it up I thought I'd share my solution I found in a Tacoma forum. I went to the dollar store and spent $2 on two tape measures, removed the belt clips and attached those with screws to the top of the scan gauge. You can just remove the back part and see all the open space it fits great. I just used those clips to clip it under the headliner and it works great. Only downside is its hidden when your sun visor is down but its still the cleanest solution I've seen for $2.
