Greetings, i just repowered my FJ with a rebuilt SBC stroked to 383, it has rebuilt stock vortec heads, a mild cam and non-roller rocker arms. Ever since i first fired it up it has had valve noise, light chatter-ticking that comes from the rocker arms not staying "straight". They work themselves to a slight angle and some will actually rub on the valve cover! I've adjusted the lash with the engine running (additional 1/2 turn on the locknuts from zero lash) and rechecked it after some run time. I've asked around locally but people i have talked to have not run into this problem before. The i trust the guy i bought the engine from (family member) but he is not sure what is causing this either.
The only thing i can think of doing at this point is installing pushrod guide plates but that seems like a patch on the problem to me. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

Do you have self aligning rocker arms?

x2, vortec heads arent machined with the pushrod slots aligning the pushrods. You either need guided rockers or you need to add the alignment plates under the studs.

Aha, that makes sense! I was wondering if it had something to do with the rocker arms themselves. thanks
