Another trip

Here are a few pics from our small outing last weekend. It was a fun day, and the troopy held up well along side the other rigs.

On the road to the desert. CRUIZA's '83 FJ40 shoring up the rear.

Mcladin's awesomely painted matt white '82 FJ40. I owned this puppy 6 years ago, didnt do much with it, and then sold it to Mcladin and he did a complete resto on it.

The group also includes surf n turf's sick FJcruiser on 6" fabtech lift and 35s.

Returning back after dark, the troopy got stuck, and needed some winching action to get free again.

Excellent job on the restoration! That is truly a beautiful Cruiser! As far as your gas can/ spare tire quandry, I suggest a full length roof rack. In my opinion it would be like icing on the cake and give you plenty of room for all your trail gear. Thanks for the awsome pics!

Just read your thread straight through. What a great story and good job getting your troopy to it's current state!

I've always wanted one as a project and stay out of the 40(s) section for that reason, it's to tempting when I see one come up for sale. Your Troopy just made the want surface again. I loved Crusher's idea; 1HZ+T+H55.

Thank for the photos.

Thanks. The question I have for you guys, and sorry if I offend any of the purist out there: Do I keep the look stock? Restore it to its original state? I've yet to order the lift kit, so I'm having an internal debate there:confused:[/QUOTE]

Just drive it and enjoy ! it's practically new compared to Canadian standards ! lol

A.M.

The purists don't live in your driveway. I did mine the way I wanted it. It appraised at 189K. So the purists who believe that changing the look devalues the vehicle... well, I didn't build it for a collector. I built it to enjoy. You drive what makes you happy. Thats why you bought it in the first place.

About Lift. I do have 2 sets of custom NEW Mule 5.5 inch shackles left. Perfect lift for 35 inch tires if they would work for you.

Thanks for the kind words fellas! I should have a few updates coming soon hopefully.

Markieboy: Outstanding job on your rig. It really is a work of art:clap. As for the shackles, I'm very happy with the set up I have but I'll ask a few of the guys here to see if they're interested in them. I assume they'd also fit on FJ40s with standard leafs?

Update

Been meaning to post an update for some time, but stuff got in the way. It cant always be cruisers:)

All you purist please do not read on, for I had the PS kit installed, and it contained a GM pump:meh: I was desperate and it was the only thing I could find. Here are a few shots

All the parts

Steering column loosened to allow install for the reman Toyota PS box

Pump
IMG-20111127-00583.jpg

Ran into a snag as the air box no longer fits in its original position, as the stock Toyota pump is mounted on the other side of the engine.
IMG-20111127-00582.jpg

After much debate and fiddling around, we decided to shorten the arm between the carb and the air box. We cut out about 1.5" and re welded it back together.
IMG-20111129-00607.jpg

The finished article.
IMG-20111130-00618.jpg

We fabed a new bracket to fit the air box. Bolted right into the same place as before.
IMG-20111130-00612.jpg

At least to the naked eye it looks stock and in its original position.:p
IMG-20111130-00611.jpg

Also managed to get a set of tie down racks, and had them drilled in. Its a great product, and extremely effective for tying down junk of all different sizes. I love the adjustability of it.

Trip

The weather has been fantastic the last couple of days, down to 20C. Rounded up CRUIZA in his newly painted matt beige FJ40 (it was previously turtle green), and we hit the dunes at Bahra, 20mins outside of Jeddah. We went for a light afternoon run, with a small bbq thrown in at sunset.

A few shots of the trip

The rig drives like a dream with the new PS kit. Dont know how I lived with it before!

Who needs tables when you have a long troopy bed? Wait....that sounded dodgy:hhmm:

CRUIZA blew a tire on the way back.
IMG_0322.jpg

Without our highlift jack, or the exhaust balloon lifter, we had to settle for the bottle jack to lift the rig. Needless to say it wasnt successful, and so we propped the rig up with the blown tire, and dug a hole deep enough to fit the spare.
IMG-20111202-00626.jpg

Right after we dusted ourselves down from this, CRUIZA's bad luck continued and the rear tire blew.
IMG-20111202-00629.jpg

Luckily the petrol station, that doubles up as a tire shop was just down the road. CRUIZA managed to limp in.
IMG_0330.jpg

And here our troopy and FJ40 found another member of the family. This one was beaten up, and looked like it had some serious miles on it:steer:
IMG_0329.jpg

Till then....

You must be careful when removing these bolts. They are cylinder head bolts. And when you release those bolts, you could twist a little the cylinder head.

I recommend to not remove these bolts, if not strictly necessary. And retighten to proper torque.

Here is a small belated update. We had the radiator checked by a vendor that does a lot of work for us repairing radiators for our customer's diesel generators. I had them take a look at the leak, and upon taking it apart, they immediately traced the source, and said the whole unit needed to be replaced. I was planning to get an original one from the dealer, but the vendor gave me an offer I couldn't turn down: a free unit. Albeit not original, its a reman unit from Jordan. Its got 2 more cores than the original, and I've used it now for two months without any issues. So far.

The original unit

Got a little issue that I cant seem to troubleshoot. Whenever the parking brake is released, the parking brake light does not switch off. What seems to be the issue?

You were doing so good up to this point! That's ok, you can always go back and change the pump to a Toyota pump.

Either way, great photos and a great truck.

Trust me this one wasnt easy! I'll keep looking for one and probably sell the GM kit, or keep it in case I do a non-original restore for another truck down the line.

Thanks for the support
