Pssst.... (Alvaro makes the rules but he is not a judge.) ;)

My interpretation of "taste" means it tastes good. Yummy things score.

I would agree just "hiding" a secret ingredient isn't going to impress.

Another favorite of my, that to me was original, taste good and presented well, with "rice" as secret ingredient was Key Lime Pie made with Rice milk. Not sure you could taste the rice, but I'm not sure I know what rice tastes like anyway.

I should note there are several judges and the decisions are rarely unanimous.

Hmmm.... why am I always remember the deserts?

Tested out the new OGrill tonight.... awesome! Though BK will complain it's too heavy.
We drive a station wagon for heavens sake. The box said it's portable :)

I am currently assembling the winning Sand Chef team's LoadSpotter slide!

If anybody is thinking of picking up a slide of their own and want to save on shipping fees, let me know and I can assemble a few more and bring them to Surf & Turf.

Good luck to the winning team!! And remember, if you have not signed up, you can't win!

The secrect ingredient

The time has come to reveal the secrect ingredient. This one is going to be a fun one. From the mountains of South America to the plains of the Midwest, is ingredient is key to our modern civilization depends on this Ingredients just as the Aztecs and Incas did.
Maize (Zea mays L. ssp. mays, pronounced /ˈmeɪz/), known in many English-speaking countries as corn, is a grass domesticated by indigenous peoples in Mesoamerica in prehistoric times. The Aztecs and Mayans cultivated it in numerous varieties throughout central and southern Mexico, to cook or grind in a process called nixtamalization. Later the crop spread through much of the Americas. Between 1250 and 1700, nearly the whole continent had gained access to the crop. Any significant or dense populations in the region developed a great trade network based on surplus and varieties of maize crops. After European contact with the Americas in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, explorers and traders carried maize back to Europe and introduced it to other countries through trade. Maize spread to the rest of the world due to its popularity and ability to grow in diverse climates.

Teams & judges, remember there are 3 categories. Taste, originality and presentation. 5 points for taste, 3 points for originality and presentation. Keep in mind that to score 5 points in taste, the secret ingredient needs to be present in the dish.
The show will start at 7pm. Be ready to cook at 630. We'll have a quick meeting then

Corn Dogs :D

We are truly humbled and fortunate to have found three recipes that work for our judging panel. My wife Tina and her friend Cheryl get all of the credit, as they did the shopping while I was working on my 40's issues.

Our winning forumla included both "Surf" and "Turf"

SURF -- Corn Chowder -- key ingredients - both bbq roasted white corn, and frozen yellow corn. We had Cod filet, King Crab and shrimp. many seasonings and spices, potatoes, red onion, red bell Pepper, half and half. -- many said this was our best entry.

TURF -- Pork Tenderloin filet, stuffed with chorizo and smashed corn chips, tied and rolled in my BBQ Rib rub and smashed corn flakes, then cooked in a Dutch oven. We topped it with a roasted white corn and Mango salsa.

Dessert -- Carmel popcorn balls. corn was popped on the camp stove. Carmel was made on site as well. popcorn, caramel, dark chocolate pieces, m&ms rolled together. Drizzled with regular carmel (store bought, but melted) and chocolate. Might have been "too many" components.

Again -- Big Thanks to Alvaro, our prize sponsor Tembo Tusk, and the other teams. It was good to see Doug back again, and unfortunate that Roberto's 3rd dish failed. The women's team always seems to push us, as all are such great competitors.

Looking forward to next year already
