Guys, I am starting to think about going to a siginaw setup. I am currently in the "tear down" stage of my rig (I just about have it torn down to the frame), but I am thinking this would be a good time to start shopping for the parts I would need when I get to building this rig back up. I know I can buy a kit that gives me everything, but I am hoping to find it cheaper to buy it peice by peice. Now my question is..... What parts do I need? Is the steering box a specific year/part number, or will any siginaw box work? What other peice parts do I need? What do I need to know to start this peice of the project?

I'm in the beginning stages of a saginaw/high steer setup. What I have found out is you need an "800" type saginaw box. If you go with a 1968 impala box, it gives you the most commonly used setup with a good ratio. You also obviously need a pump off a GM/saginaw set up. I am buying a rebuilt box from a google search and a pump from an old V8 chevy pickup I bought cheap for parts on my engine/tranny conversion. Then you need to plate a spot on the frame which is detailed many times in the FAQ section at the top of the page. Good luck, I'll need some too.:)

FAQ covers it all ad nauseam.....I'm starting mine this week.

the pump bracketts listed in the link above are really nice, i'd recommend them.

fwiw, i sell the ps plte skits for $80 shipped. that includes the ps plate, ps box spacers ( thick wall dom tubing ), grade 8 mounting hardware and the scab plate for the inside of the passenger frame horn.

putting the "ps conversion kit" together yourself can save you money and will allow you to pick the parts and components that will suit your application best. i'd recommend assembling the kit yourself if you have the confidence and time to do so. make sure you do your research. the tech links on this site are a great place to start.

there is a Heep box that works for this swap....i have the PN at home if you would be interested..i think its about 300 for a NEW box and...there is also a newer box and pump from a more current vehicle that was recamended to me by someone after i had my swap done, ill look and see what i can find, dont have anything on me at school

I was wondering if anybody used any other PS boxes. This answers that question! haha. This is the info I was hoping to get out of the thread (options & ideas) Thanks.... when you get a chance let me know that P/N of the heep box.

Hi All:

The J**p PS gearbox is the one intended for a J20 pick-up.

Good luck!

Alan

Do the J**p PS boxes mount the same as the Sig's? Or, are they simuliar to the mini truck PS setup? The reason I am going the Sig route, is to get the box upfront and eliminate the drag link! Also... (been meaning to ask this anways)..... With the steering box up front, does it matter where exactly the box is mounted? Everyone that I have ever seen is right in front of the X-member. I am thinking I just need get the box as close as I can to the Cross Memeber? Or, are there specific locations for the mounting holes?

the "SAG" box is the same as the 80s vintage jeep boxes ( they used sag boxes on the jeeps ). make sure you get a 4 bolt 4.25 turn box.

you won't be eliminating the drag link, but you will eliminate the relay rod. the TRE on the relay rod at the steering box commonly bends, another good reason to go with the sag setup.

the box needs to end up in front of the x-member for proper drag link and tie rod geometry. if you mount the box farther back, the rods will hit each other.

Thanks for correcting me.. haha, have no idea why I type'd "SIG" haha. I am learning as I go here and keep interchanging the terminoligy of the steering components:o (But you got what I was getting at)

I am in the same boat as you are, trying to figure out everything ahead of time. So I might as well make a list and find out if I forgot anything.

Saginaw steering gear: Napa #88277080 (the core charge makes it painful)
custom or kitted gear mount
Saginaw PS pump: rockauto.com #206823
pump bracket: for F, 2F, or SBC like me (haven't gotten a chance to run to a junk yard; hopfully I can get something really cheap)
Pitman arm or other
One of many steering shaft solutions

and one thing to not forget is to get the correct hose fittings and hoses; which I haven't nailed down yet

while you're at it, summint can supply you with the flaming river steering shaft setup with the proper u-joints and the sag box ( usually ). that way you can keep the # of vendors down and your shipping cost as well. napa should be able to supply you with all these items as well, but they'll be a little more expensive ( although they usually don't charge you any shipping ).

I certainly agree with everything posted above. Yes, a used box can be from almost any full or mid sized GM vehicle (my last used box was from a Chevy S-10), or many Jeep vehicles have what you need. Other choices, however, are remanufactured from AGR (but normally too powerful, destroys steering components), or remanufactured from Downey. Ours has the AGR stainless steel internals and dual stage valving, but not the excessive 1500 lbs. operating pressure. I also think SOR offers a reman???. Pay close attention to threads/fittings, they change from SAE in 1980-older to Metric o-ring in 1981-newer. Also pay attention to input shaft spline count, and know that splines are counted on a full 360 degree circle. PM me to see if I can be of any help with your bargin hunting?????
