I have ben eyeing these tents for awhile and noticed the 60/62 series tents are no longer available :frown:... I would think the 80 series tent would fit a 62 series (not perfectly though). Has anyone tried an 80 series on a 60/62 or does anyone think the fit would be too far off to be of use?

Also, does anyone have any feedback about these tents... are they junk, are they rugged, etc?

I don't want to pay $2k+ for a tent setup and I only plan on spending occasional weekends using it not weeks at a time.

x2 on what Chris said. You can get a mombassa for $6-700 new or get a screaming deal on a used one. goto car top tent dot com.

Or goto RackTents.com and get an Oasis2 RTT

I wasn't aware there were so many RTT sales people around...:)

Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't think a RTT fits my intended application... I currently am using 4 yakima load bars, my guess is the yakima bars would not be sturdy enough to hold my weight plus the weight of a RTT which would result in purchasing a new roof rack as well.

I plan on using the truck as the tent/sleeping quarters, there will be a boat on the roof and when I pull the boat off I planned on slipping over something similiar to the SOR wagon tent (load bars removed if needed).

The SOR wagon tent is pricey but also convenient for the intended application... when not in use I am sure it can be rolled up to the size of large sleeping bag.

I guess I could always measure it up and try to make my own for maybe half the price, anyway - thanks for the suggestions folks.

I would like to go back to the main topic here. I understand that many of you are happy with your rooftop set-ups, but I to would love to hear if anyone has possitive or negative feedback on the wagon tent set-ups. I have thought for some time I would like to make one of these kits. If anyone has one, I would love to see more close up pics of how it is put together and what materials they used to make it.

Thanks Folks.

Crazy price for the wagon tents though Gunnar. I think it would be a good idea for you to bring your own version into production at a much lower price. I'd buy one;)

Me too! Grey material if possible please! :p

Toad:

I had the 1st gen SOR Wagon Cap: the canvas material was fairly hefty, stitching good, and it fit the cruiser fine.

Unfortunately, 1st gen wasn't meant for habitation: no windows, or openings of any kind. I wound up selling it (er, giving it away, since the 'buyer' hasn't paid me) rather than taking it to a marine shop to have it rebuilt as a tent.

I was also concerned about the PITA required to detach & reattach my Yakima bars in order to use it.

FWIW, when I had my RTT, 3 yakima bars held it & me & some toys just fine.

I've got one for my 80. I really like it. It's great for car camping. It takes about a min to put up. Provides good ventilation. Everything about it is made so it doesn't damage your 80. The material is very heavy duty. I couldn't imagine it being able to tear on anything. The zippers are very well built. The screen in the back is not regular screening it's more like fiberglass screening but rubbery and about 4 times as thick. I have some friends that have 62's so next time one of them comes by the house I'll put it on and try it out. Best part is having just the sceen closed in the back and fact it towards the mountains. Makes for great veiws. Plus in the morning when things are a little cold you can just reach around the seat and crank the vehicle up and be nice and toastly in minutes. I've had it out on top of a mountain with 30-40mph gusts and it never had an issue. With the second row seats out I can fit a full air mattress in the back and still be able to put up the tailgate. Leaves me room for a cooler and my shoes and what ever else you need space for.

One issue for you is with a rack other than stock it won't work. Unless you take the bars off. It's made to fit tight.

Trollhole - If you could let me know how the fit is on a 62 that would be awesome! It looks to me like it would be a decent fit with no issues but they are a bit spendy so confirmation would be greatly appreciated.

If it fits, I guess I will have to get some sliding rear windows to take advantage of the screen....

I was looking at the SOR tent for a long time for my 60, when they were available. However it was very expensive, and I just didn't think it was worth it. All it basically did was cover the windows, I could not see spending almost $400.00 for that.

I will say that the people that have seen it in person said they wanted one and it was really cool. BUt when I told them how much it cost they thought it was a bit high. But it is made in limited quantities and basically custom. I got mine free when I bought the 80.

It doesn't fold up to the size of a sleeping bag unless your sleeping bag is straight out of the 1960's.

I use 4 yakima load bars. Me, my girlfriend, and our clothes fit comfortably. There is no issue with the weight. I tried it with two load bars, and it was not too bad either. I just got a screaming deal to the extra two.

That's not a real website. Some domain squatter is on it.

Roof Top Tent try that one

I emailed SOR about the 60 series tent to see if they had specs for it so I could get one made. Said they didn't have anything to share, but said that any upholstery shop could probably make it from a picture.

Probably so. But, I'm just going to make some good curtains to go with my plywood sleeping platform. And I've got a big mosquito net I can throw over the whole truck if I want to sleep with the windows down.

Trollhole,

A satellite dish, on a tree, in the woods, SERIOUSLY?

Were you worried about missing a NASCAR race or something?

Kinda puts a spin on "roughing it" don't you think?
