Hey,

When I first bought my LX470 I was very happy with its off-road ability, since I new it was just like the LC.

What about the RX, has it always been in LX470's shadow?

Any input would be great, at how a RX will handle the off-road!

Thanks

p.s
I might test drive the RX soon!

The LX's time might be up!

Ummm, it's a unibody front wheel drive car, with an AWD option, not a truck. I think it's based on the Camry and is a paternal twin to the Highlander. Probably not much of an off road vehicle, unless off road is just gravel roads.

you got one val. one more than i thought you'd get.

everyone knows that you can get super good gas mileage with the hybrid RX and that makes it way better. we know your LX's days are numbered.

True, but you'll never recoup the cost of a Hybrid RX vs. 99 LX470. Assuming the LX is worth $18k the $24,580 difference in purchase price alone = 114,760 city miles worth of gas in the LX.

I've only driven the V6 RX330, RX350, and ES350. RX is much faster off the line and certainly more "sports car" like than the LX. LX workmanship and interior finish is superior. The gate shifter on the RX seems kind of cheesy. Also, the windows aren't UV absorbing, so the side of my face/neck gets roasted in the summer. Visibility isn't nearly as good as in the LX despite being smaller. Part of it is the lower seating position, part is the C/D pillars. It should be cheaper to maintain, though. I wouldn't take that thing offroad unless it's smooth/graded and flat. OTOH, it's only HALF the price of the LX. For the ES350, I didn't like the perforated leather seats, as there's an A/C vent inside the seat blowing up...freezes your crotch, even in June in AZ!

hey these are 2 different animals we have both in the family rx (wife) any way no low gears etc its all wheel dr and great in wet but i dont like it it is very roomy i love the fact that the rear seats can be adjusted

Dude, you are funny. That's like trying to compare a mansion to a motorhome, the two are entirely different. Off road in the RX, have at it, it should be wonderful to watch.

this one's poking fun at the others. despite that, some seem to be responding as if it were serious.....

an attempt to add a bit of levity, i presume.

dude i was laughing my ass off reading this stuff. seriously, who thought he was serious?!?

Jim, you ought to be ashamed.

Can we get a vs. X3 thread next?

Actually, the toyota "eco" challenge 2005 (Beijing to Mongolia across the Gobi desert) featured a fully ARB-equipped HDJ100, a RX hybrid, and prius hybrid. All three made it, but I think the HDJ was really there to bail out the RX and prius hybrids. No idea if those hybrids were stock, or if the drove the exact same route, as one pic showed the LC doing a water crossing, albeit probably not very deep. The LC only had ARB sahara bar, Kaymar rear bar, safari snorkel, Koito HID driving lights, and 285 goodyears, otherwise stock. Oh, yeah, and they did get the HDJ100 stuck in sand and had to dig it out and use sand ladders, so I'm sure the hybrids must have gotten stuck had they taken the same route (although pics didn't show it).

Here are results from the '06 rally...the Harrier (RX) hybrid beats the LC100, but I think it was intended (otherwise, the 100 would probably have to backtrack to bail out its team members). FJ cruiser did well. In the '05 rally, the LC70 smoked all but the dirt bikes!

You guys are funny, I am serious, I went to my Local Lexus dealer, Longo, and test drove it.

Here are some pics, it's nothing great but gave me an idea what the RX could do!

My cousin's family has two kids. That makes it the four of them. Before they had kids, they used to drive accords/camrys. Once they had the first child, they got a minivan and replaced the car with a Lexus ES300. They loved the ride and the reliability.

Now........... they did not want a minivan anymore, but still wanted some room to put the kids in and their stuff when driving about (they travel a lot in summer) ..... and a Lexus. Since they were impressed by the quality and reliability of Lexus vehicles, they looked at the RX300 and RX330. 300 was too small, so they got the 330.

.......It can haul all of them with ease, is safe, handles snow well, and can carry them with ease. They even like the looks. I don't like the looks, but if I was the father of a family with two kids, it would be a nice alternative vehicle to a minivan....

And, of course, comparing RX to a LC/LX is a waste of time........

my 2 cents......

I don't think RX is for offroad, I hope you are not serious lol.

All right, my bad... carry on :)

I don't think RX is for offroad, I hope you are not serious lol.

It will do fine in snow and gravel logging roads which is more than most folks ever do with any rig. I think it is fine to compare them if you realize that the LX is far superior offroad. If you take serious offroad out of the equation then you have a better comparison. It now depends on size, handeling, mpg etc and price.

Good Luck

ours does great in the snow but anything deep i would be scared we take our lx when we do our beach stuff i guess you can air down but i would not even try that. but for easy stuff it is a good car oh and i have to put this in my wife now has 24k miles and not one thing has broken or any problems which we would have to go to the dealership for but my 06 lx has had a ton of problems and it only has 20k so go figure

LOL...

I left my LX at Longo Lexus for service they gave me a RX loaner, so a buddy of mine came up with RX VS. LX.

I wanted to take it to the mud pits but I was to scared!

LOL

Very nice car I might add!

The RX is a nice loaner when I get my LX serviced. It also helps me appreciate the LX more. Off road - it is better than a Camry (distant cousin). It is similar to its cousin the Highlander, but sportier and nicer.

If I never had the LC/LX, I would think the RX was great. It has a lot of room for 4, flexible storage, handles well, in AWD it can handle light-med snow well, and it is comfortable and sporty. There is a reason it is so popular and its owners really like them. It gets OK mileage, but I have heard owners of the hybrid are very disappointed - they only get about 22 mpg.
