Rust spots (1 Viewer)

I have some rust spots coming through the paint on my 4runner and some chips. Also there is some on the cruiser I'd like to take care of. I know pretty much nothing about painting need to find out the steps to take to fix them.

The rust in the second picture is inside the engine bay on the other side of the well in the first.

Looks like surface rust for now. But you should address it before it gets worse.

In the areas where it's inside the wheel wells or engine bay, i would wire brush or sand it to bare metal and prime it then paint it with a rustoleum silver. on the outside do the same but you have to be careful with sanding and with painting it to match the factory color.

that's just surface rust!

Sand to bare metal, prime and paint. Like was said before be careful on exterior to match colors. Could use some POR or RustBullet on area in third pic to get at the seam better.

Hey Marc! Just been busy getting situated up here.

I've got a palm sander I could use on the wheel wheel well, but would it be better to get a dremel or something to pinpoint the area? To fill in would the touch up paint from Toyota be enough?

For rust spots, I really like KBS Coatings. They have a System Sampler that works well for taking care of rust spots. After you have done that, just use some touch up paint.

spray some "Must for rust" on there, it will come right off. You can find it at home depot.

Must for rust has Phospheric acid in it. Destroys rust... I'd be careful when spraying it on, maybe tape around the areas so you dont destroy the paint... but I'd spray wait 30 seconds, dab with a cloth, wipe off. Repeat that till the rust is gone.

I am pretty sure he recommended silver paint for behind the fender only, as that seems to be the factory color in that area. If you hit it with black, or any other color it will not blend in as well.

in need of courage

i have a few spots of surface rust that i want to treat before they become an issue. ive read about gentle sanding and then primer and then touch up paint. i have NO experience with auto paint. down the road i want to repaint the whole vehicle. will my touch ups affect a 'repaint' down the road? prob. a dum ?, but i just wanted some imput from folk with experience.

Touch it up.

When they paint it down the road, they will sand it all down to a smooth even surface anyway.

What your doing will protect the metal from getting more rust in the mean time.
