nice jack, looks brand new;)

i dont remember if you were there when i slid off whiteline and flopped into the wall, but it did a number on my pillar, i used a hi lift to get it back. turned out good enough.

I should of ordered a new gasket, but I couldn't wait. Windshield is back in and will do for now. Alittle front brake work (sticking driverside front drum) and it's off to the emissions sniffer.:cool:

Let the piggie out of the pen today. I printed up the temporary 3 day tag and took it for a spin. 12 miles and a top speed of 50 mph wasn't too bad for the first time out. I need to adjust the front drums alittle more then off to emissions tomorrow. If all goes well it will be licensed and insured by the end of the day.

Nice 55
Cruisers are easy to get on their sides and roofs. You did good on the windshield
Lottsa luck on the emissions. Which is insane to test on that old of vehicle.
Don't make it to nice then you'll be afraid to enjoy it.
And the dents in the bumper just adds character.

Well, I have been driving it all over today, but failed emissions. I'll be tweaking the carb a bit and try again. Either way, it was fun to drive it around. I might even try and hit the dirt later tonite and put it in 4wd. I'll get some pix.

Time for an update. It failed emissions twice now. I did manage to put over 100 miles on it though. Something is still not right with the carb. I have rejetted it to the high alttitude settings and installed a Petronix. The idle solenoids power lead is broken off and is too short to fix. I plan to replace that, do some more carb tweaking and go for a retest next week. Wish me luck. :hhmm:

GL Jack! How many 55's do you see around Phoenix? Probably several that you will be able to wave to once you're mobile!!

Howdy! If the idle solinoid is not hooked up, then that will make a big difference on smog testing. Are you failing at idle speed or cruising? There are at least 1/2 dozen of us driving around the metro Phoenix area. John

I have somebody sending me the idle solenoid. It failed CO's in the cruise test and HC's at idle.

man i keep hiting the wrong button,,, heres some food for thought, maybe help maybe not.

A vehicle that has sharply elevated HC or CO emissions at idle will usually have a noticeable misfire and/or rough idle. The most likely causes here would be:
Fouled spark plug(s);

Shorted spark plug wire(s) or defective plug boot(s);

Vacuum leak;

Burned exhaust valve;

Misadjusted air/fuel mixture; or

Misadjusted carburetor idle mixture.

High CO readings during cruise indicate a rich fuel condition. Causes here may include:

Exhaust leaks (check manifold gaskets and air plumbing connections);

Float level and operation

Power valve operation

High HC during cruise would indicate a steady misfire or loss of compression (leaky exhaust valve).

remember that vacuum guage? low vacuum and a little shaky?

I hear yeah. It could be any or all of that.............hopefully not valve issues. I replaced all the vacuum lines and reconnected per the diagram. I'll just keep checking things. It'll pass eventually.:doh:

its frustrating, i know. specially when it was supposed to be a quick on the road project.

Howdy! Hopefully the new solenoid will make a big difference. It should definitely fix the HC at idle, and it may help the CO at cruise, since the carb settings are probably all out of whack trying to get it to run/idle without a working solenoid. How bad did it fail, just a little, or a whole bunch? If it was close before, then the retune and an oil change may be enough to get you thru. Good Luck. John

Jack, it's Billy, the guy who came over to look at your 40 parts from Craigslist. That Pig is turning out nice. Have you passed emissions yet? Denatured alcohol has helped me in the past. Nice score on the parts 55. I actually almost bought it about 10 years ago when it was in almost DD condition. Keep up the good work.:cool:

I have done all the obvious things to help with emissions, oil change, plugs, filters, set timing and so on. I am awaiting the idle solenoid, should be here this week. It currently has the 200 jet in the secondaries. I think I'll change it back to the 175 though. I'll check a few more things then add some alcohol and try again. I have a contact at an emission station that said he should be able to help. We shall see what happends on Friday. Thanks again for all the suggestions and help.

Got the solenoid today and installed it. The old one had a broken power lead and the pin had been cut down. I also swapped out the secondary jet from 200 to the 175. Seems to run (no road test yet) better. I am shooting to retest next Friday. In the meantime, I can get 30 day registration and drive around some more.:D

It failed emissions the third time.......CO's on both idle and loaded. I guess I don't have the magic touch with the carbs.;p
Doesn't really matter though. I got collector car insurance, which makes it emissions exempt.....limited usage though. I then registered it and got the cool historic AZ plates. They are solid copper with red letters. This will cover me for now.
Action pictures will be posted soon.:cool:

I washed 39 years of dirt out of the rear fenders, made some cargo area panels, and installed a bike rack I had collecting dust.

Need to figure out how to remove the old carpet cement, orangish stuff around new panels
