I have been considering putting my stock FJ62 rear springs on the back of my 40 (currently sprung over, FJ55 springs) for an additional increase in WB.

I saw this on RuffStuff's site 2+ Perch Kit - RuffStuff Specialties And thought, neat idea, but I have my reservations.

1. My buddies 67 Nova attached in the same way (no U-bolts) and we actually lost the rearend on it driving to the strip once (drag radials, 500Hp do not mix).

2. Leverage, that is going to induce a ton of twist into the rear, I am running a traction bar but still have my concerns.

3. Well, no third reason, just wanted to look "busy".

What say all of you, I am curious and VERY close to pulling the trigger? This setup would net me a 4 inch gain in my current wheelbase (98 inches) without having to cut the stock spring mounts off (which I am not against but would rather avoid the hassle).

I used 60 springs in the rear of my forty. I believe the 62 has the same dimensions , I flipped them and got 8 more inches of wb. Used the front hangers and had to make a set of shackle hangers for the rear, extended the brake lines and ordered Woods drive shaft. not much work for a substantial change in wb imo Oh ya, also drilled my axle spring perch 1in back

FJ62 rear springs are stronger, or more heavy-duty than fj60 springs. I used them on Marvin. With steep shackle angle they ride great.

I originally mounted them flipped, but I wanted a closer-to-stock look, so I put them back. It still stretched the wheelbase by about 2", then I put them in the last hole in the perches for another inch of stretch. That was enough for me. Marvin's wheelbase is about 99" now.

I don't know how thrilled I'd be about no u-bolts. If you've been in a car that lost the rear end, I'm surprised you're considering it. If you're going to flip the springs I don't see why you need the extra stretch.

I considered them for the front of my truck but didnt want to have to notch them and also have some reservations on tire clearance with the core support.. I have not yet ruled them out but I think a trac bar would be required even up front with the use of them, out back your spring over so you should already have one.

I'm right there with Trent. It seems that the axle would then need a trac bar, but it's hard to say without actually seeing someone run them. Does anyone have a set on their rig?

Trac bar is there, will stay.

These will not go up front, I am already 4.5 inches forward and steering clearance is becoming an issue.

On the Nova that lost it's rear, those were original bolts holding the axle in after a LOT of hard launches at the strip, we replaced them and they are probably good for another 30 years.

We shall see, I want to track down a 60 rear to swap in at the same time, if I do it I will post up.

I used 60 springs in the rear SO and used their "normal" spring perch. Drilled a couple new holes in my old "skid plate" ubolt plates and just used new ubolts. The holes let you shift it maybe 1.5" either direction from center.

It looks like their plates act as a longer lever holding onto the spring and may help with wrap a little. The 60 springs had to have a wrap bar. Under hard acceleration you could hear the ujoint start to tap the yoke.

I have that RS kit on the rear of my f toy with a TG housing. So far I like the heck out of it. I check the bolts like crazy and so far have only taken a small amount to keep them tight.

Can you post some pics?

The bolts that go directly over the axle will need to be cut down some or they will screw in far enough to hit the axle tube. If you need more pics let me know. It's sitting in the garage so no biggie.

Well, that decides it, after my October Moab trip I'm gonna bite the bullet and tear her apart.

Those look good, did you change the nozzle on your mig gun to get between the housing and the plate lol?

I probably should have. lol It was tight. I welded all of the outside and as much as I could reach inside. I don't think it's going anywhere. I have beat it pretty hard since then and it has taken it.

Any more info? I hope to add these to the rear axle and maybe an fj60 spring, a lot options if i arrange a nice adjustable anti wrap bar...

Thank you, might be just what i'm looking for for my other rig.

Not much, I am not doing this until I locate a 60 or 80 series rear to plop under my 40, then I will document my work.
