Hey Guys,

Have the rig at my local Yota dealer this morning getting a whole bunch of work done in prep for HIH7. I'm having them install new OEM rear shocks with OME 865 springs. They called and said that they have to drop the rear end to install the OME's as they are taller than stock.

Without knowing the rear suspension setup, is this correct and if so, how long should (additional $$) something like this take? Just want to have some knowledge when they call me back.

Yes you have to drop the rear axle to install the new springs. My only concern would be the stock OEM shocks not being long enough for the newer longer length OME springs.

Thx Bama - thought this was a fairly common setup on here with folks running oem Toyota shocks with OME 865s in rear? Can someone chime in who has this setup?

You may be competely right, I don't know what lift the 865's give. Just wanted to raise the question before you get them installed.

I don't know if the OEM shocks would work but I do know that they don't have to drop the rear end. The way I did mine:
Leave one tire on so you are working on the opposite side, disconnect the sway bar link ends on both sides, jack up the side with the tire on so the side without the tire would drop enough to remove the old spring and install the OME, put the tire back on and now repeat on the opposite side.Did this in my driveway in 30 minutes.
Make sure to use jack stands holding your truck on the frame. SAFETY FIRST.
Dealers go by the book!!

Yup, you can do both sides in under and hour. It's a super-easy job.

The 865s are actually shorter than OEM springs. They have a different spring rate which makes the vehicle sit a little higher. Still have to drop the rear end, but if they're installing new shocks, they're disconnecting anyway.

One of my favorite riding setups was 865s and stock shocks. Great mild wheeling and around town setup.

It is super easy. Between swapping the springs out, adding spacers, and taking spacers out between my 100 and my 80 I've got to where I can do mine in about 30 minutes. Just getting the jacks and jack stands in place takes longer then anything else,.

This is what I run, love it.

Yes the 865's work with oem shocks.

Once the shocks are off swapping the coils is stupid easy.

Once the shocks are off swapping the coils is stupid easy. After taking the shock off the lower post.......then just jack it up till the coil almost falls out "gravity" does all the work.

Yes it's stupid easy. (Unless you forget step 1, which I forgot for about 15mins one time)

Changing springs are super easy, if you follow all the steps above you'll be set. My advice is just keep on eye on the rear brake lines and make sure you don't pull them too much. You can always disconnect the brake line bracket if needed to get extra slack; however it's not necessary.

Thanks to everyone for all the quick responses. I haven't heard back from the dealer so I'm assuming they figured out that they didn't need to drop the rear axle to get the 865's in and that the shocks are long enough. But we all know what happens when one assumes...

Excited to see how she rides with new OEM shocks all around, 865's in rear, and new BFG K02's 275/70R18 all around!

This is interesting. Starting to lose confidence in my go to dealer as they called saying that the aftermarket springs (OME 865's) are taller than stock and they'll have to drop the rear end to get them to fit so expect additional labor charge...

Does anyone have a link to the height comparison of our OEM coil vs OME 865 coil? I may need to bring this in when they try to charge me extra for dropping the rear end when they already dropped it when they removed the old shocks.

If the dealer is already in there replacing your shocks all they really have to do in addition to that is unbolt the sway bar. And I'm sure they have it on a lift. Easy as pie. I don't see how they could charge much more, if any.

Did you crank your front tb's? I have had a pair of 865's for some time, installed oem shocks all the way around but have held off on the 865's because my ds tb is maxed out and need to reindex, really dread that. Or, if I have to reindex and remove should I just upgrade the tb's? Sorry for thread hijack!!

Yes, the dealer is already in there replacing the shocks and it's on a lift. I'll find out soon enough what additional charges (if any) they are going to try to pull on me.

Not yet - new shocks and springs are going on real time and I didn't ask them to crank the T bars. Guess I'll see how much higher the rear is than the front and adjust accordingly. As far as I know, no one's ever touched the position of the T bars so hopefully I'm not maxed out.
