Hi!

Getting my wife a cruiser. I need to get it from Japan so I want to first learn how the rpm’s are around 130 as we travel about that speed on road trips. Maybe 145. I have a 2uz and love it. In my truck. But I want diesel for our family car - but NOT if those speeds are excessive rps and abusive to the powetrain. My 2ct camry doesn’t like speeds over 110-115. Can’t live with that for 2,000 km trips…

Thanks

1hz rpm at a little over 120 kph.

Darn that’s disappointing…. I assume it’s wel over 3500 pushing 4,000 at at 135 and we travel at that speed on road trips :( maybe I should just get 2uz. I can’t imagine 12 hours of 4,000 rpm’s is ok for a diesel

Thank you

In my experience Diesel engines are fine to run higher rpm’s. They tend to run more efficiently when they are “working”.
Diesel engines that I’ve owned in the past (Cummins) didn’t get very warm when unloaded or not working. In fact they usually required a cover for the radiator in winter so that they could get up to operating temperature.
I think the balance is finding an rpm range that provides adequate operating temperatures and fuel efficiency.
Most likely even with a diesel high in the rpm range, it’ll yield better mpgs than the 2UZ.

Edit: and I agree with @Patron100LC bigger tires will lower your rpm.

I am drawn to Diesel because of how much I am enjoying my diesel Camry . Battery efficiency, better longevity. but 2uz I am drawn to Diesel because of how much I am enjoying my diesel Camry. Battery efficiency, better longevity. Is one of the best Engines ever made… The one in my tundra has 208,000 very very hard miles on it, and I trust it to California and back right now. The transmission, on the other hand, worries me just because of how it’s been used and the fact that it is a “ware item“

I wonder what they have for a gear ratio in these Land Cruiser’s? I am sure the US market one has a lower ratio, and would swap right in… I don’t care about my speedometer, I care about being able to keep up with traffic at 80 and not kill my car

I appreciate you guys. Anybody with a Japanese domestic gas model would be welcome to chime in as well I am grateful for the help

1HDFTE from my 05 GCC was perfect for city stop and go traffic and okay with 65MPH cruising and not so exciting when overtaking at those speeds - slow to accelerate even with the Turbo. My current 2UZFE VVTi is perfect for interstate but horrible in city stop/go traffic. Both have identical low rpm torque but the 2UZ VVTi has linear torque from 3k-5k rpm and is good enough for me when overtaking 65mph through 80mph in the freeway. Can’t have it all in one Cruiser, I suggest get the 1HDFTE and 2UZ 😆🥃

Lol this is just for my wife. She has a crown Majesta 2jz as well. An odyssey we’ll likely keep. We share a camry convertible. I have a camry diesel, 50 and 54 Chevy. This is just a new family car. I’m thinking 2uz is the way to go sadly. We need to be able to go 85. My tundra is at like 2500 or less there with 2uz. Praying jdm uj100 is the same. Otherwise usdm differential swaps

I would be looking at a completely different vehicle if I wanted to do 85+ on road trips. Why do you want a 100 series?

The manual diesels have super high RPMs - 2800@100kph IIRC, which is just crazy. The 1HD-FTE with the 5 speed auto is 2350RPM@120kph. I drive it 130 all the time, sometimes for hours. Redline is 4200, so no issue with that.
It can do 140kph (legal limit here), but that's sluggish with 33" MTs. Burns about 13l/100km (~18mpg) at 130kph (80mph) and normal tires.

Rhetoric

like you assumed (I know because of how you asked) there is a good reason.

We’ve had a minivan since 2 weeks before my first of 4 kids was born. That’s worked great. About 3 years ago, we started exploring JDM. Now it’s time for her to replace the van. I - with 21 years of automotive experience - think there is nothing better for our family than 3rd gen odyssey with the 07-10 trans. My wife agrees. But she still has her wants.

She loves the look of newer Yukon, Escalade. They are trash and also they disintegrate in our salty winter roads in 4-5 years.

That leaves 2gen 2uz sequoia (which is on the table but in third place. LX570 (I don’t want a 5.7 and I don’t want to spend that)

Then there is Land Cruiser. J100 is the newest I can import with ridiculous American laws

So - though I don’t normally bother explaining my self on the internet, I felt since this is a forum and not a group, and it seems like you had some advice to offer, not just a stone to throw, there you go lol.

Why diesel? I’ve had my mind blown by my camry. I think it’s better than gas. And will last longer plus it’s just darn neat in this country where few others have it

That’s very helpful! I have 33s on my truck and was going to run them in this if I do buy. Now I know not too.

So at 130, the vehicle feels comfortable? Over over worked? Thank you so much

With regular tires it is perfectly comfortable. Up until 120kph the truck has very good (for its size & weight lol) dynamics and acceleration, 120-140 is slower, but it happens, again perfectly ok for the highway. Max I have tried was 180, with a very slight incline, but it was not very pleasant, I would say 140 is the upper limit of comfort. It's just too big, too heavy and too high (:

Normally I am running Toyo MTs on 18" - 275/70/18 - heavy tire on a heavy rim - about 50kg per wheel. 120 is my normal cruising speed and it can do it for days I very rarely drive faster than that. It can get to 140 with the Toyos, but only on flat. Heavy tires really, really make a difference in the dynamics. The Toyos have P speed index - up to 150kph and balance very well.
Previous winter I had 30.5" (smallest you can put on the J100) highway winter tires on 16" rims and it was accelerating like a rocket on them, compared to 33" MTs on 18" (:

Context is important for a lot of reasons. Even to us lowly internet folk. Thanks for explaining.

Cruiser Outfitters offers taller ratio transfer cases. Plus you can regear diffs if you want taller. But as someone who regeared a VW TDI I can tell you the lower RPMs were met with a very sluggish driving experience, even in a tuned car with hardware mods. So: beware that lower RPMs are not the end-all win for diesels… or gas engines for that matter. You can easily run diesels hard for days and days and days even if you are pushing redline.

This is not a camry. This is a very heavy brick flying down the road.

As a fellow salt state resident I can tell you its just as hungry for the 100 series. Please undercoat and preserve!

Thank you both so much!

Hey rhetoric please don’t think I made that internet comment rudely - I just have found Facebook groups to be extensor abusive. Rarely forums in comparison. Your question was fair so I answered.

We’re in Rochester. We go to Ohio and Maine a lot. It’s flat we keep up with traffic at 85. I had a clean 2006 3mz sienna in stock and my kids begged me to keep it and ditch out 2007 odyssey. It is like 1,000rpms higher with less power at speeds we regularly travel so I was like “nope.”

That said, wife prefers JDM cars and if that saves me having to get a flipping GM product, I’m all in

So we’ve talked about HD, is the HZ as good?

The only down side here is I don’t want her to have to pump diesel. I may get a fuel cell for my plow truck and get it cheaper at the reservation anyway. And I’ll always try to keep it full so she doesn’t have to

It will get Krown Rust Control. Sadly this will be a daily driver and therefor “consumable” unlike her jzs149 and all of our other “cool cars”

I own both. 1HZ and 2UZ. 1HZ is for farming and sounds like a tractor and vibrates when shutting down. 2uz is miles ahead in comfort and quietness. I suggest get 2uz, very easy to find parts for it. Specially engine oil filter, spark plug, ignition coils etc.
1hz is only good for third world countries and if you buy 1HZ or 1HD, you won't be able to find parts for it in your local parts store, such as injectors, oil filter etc. Parts for diesel engines are more expensive than petrol engine.

Thank you both so much!

You are all good. Welcome!

Rochester NY or MN?

I brought my 2007 from NC to MN and coated it with RP-342 before winter set in. I do annual touch ups to keep rust at bay. Well worth the time and investment. I also just threw my snow tires on!

For reference, I just had my rig at 85 gps as I wanted to live in your shoes for a minute. RPMs showed 2765 with the 5-speed.

Kamran - how about the hd? I just love this camry diesel and imagine an i6 would be much better

Rhetoric

New York (but not anything like nyc. 6 hours northwest into the country.

85 at 2765 is awesome! Maybe I’ll just snag one and see how it works for a while on a dealer plate
