Frickin' A my paint is hurting! Check out the pics. So the clearcoat is eaten through and i'm not sure how to fix a paint blemish of this magnitude. I think this requires a little more than touch-up paint.

Wow, you need to let a clearcoat specialist look at that. Don't know if you have acid rain in that part of NC, but it looks like that might have something to do with it. The 80 I just bought (came from Delaware) has two or three spots like that on it, each about 1" in diameter. I'll be interested in what you discover as a solution.

Jim

I haven't really noticed or heard of bad acid rain around here (greensboro). I did notice that area starting to fade a little last summer, but did'nt think much of it. Now that i haven't washed my truck in like 6 months it seems to have gotten real bad, real quick. I'll let a paint place look at it. I know they will say i need to repaint my entire truck.........bastids.

That looks like a re-finish clear-coat that has failed. It will require a re-finish of the affected panels and a blend into adjacent panels.

So what would be the poor man's fix for a rig that is becoming more and more a trail rig? And don't say just leave it be, or rattle can. I'm thinking of wetsanding it and then applying clearcoat over it and walking away?! what chu think?

How did winter in GBO do that? Looks like you need to practice your spittin' that chewin tobacco....

If you could get all the way back to wherever the real "edge" of the flaking is, you could probably get clearcoat to stick and sand it to match. One thing is for sure, it ain't getting any better so its probably worth a try.

Has that truck ever been repainted? I have seen flaking like that on a repaint job, but never on OEM factory paint. Factory paint usually just fades. If it was later painted by a body shop, it might be a bad batch of clear coat.

I have 4-5 tiny spots, all on my hood. about 1/4 the diameter of a pencil.

Not a big deal, just don't want them to get worse.....

I don't think acid rain is a problem here, but I'm no native, but tree sap will kill paint quick I believe. I'd bet once an imperfection forms, freezing dew just gets in there and expands and pops more off.

It sounds like you are not going to drop a lot of $ on a repaint.....I'd be interested in seeing what it looks like if you go the wetsanding clear-coat rattle route.

Cbizkit hit the nail on the head. The big question is how extensive is that crappy respay work. Right now the pass fender is going to need that crappy paintwork removed...and if pic 1 is your hood..it'll need to come down as well. I'd look it over very carefully to determine where it has been resprayed....obviously whomever did it ...didn't do it very well. The last thing you want to do is chase it every year. Find its limits and remove it all down to the factory paint and spray it back properly.

I really think that my passenger front fender has been repainted. When, where, why i have no idea. No mention of a collison or anything when i searched the vin or spoke to the PO before purchase. I had noticed the fender begining to fade last summer but didn't think much of it. There is one thing though that i have been thinking could be the culprit. During the summer we have a huge oak that shades where i park. No real bad sap, but some for sure. BUT, there are these little orange/brown teeny-tiny piles of stuff (not real sure what it is, almost looks like little deposits from insects) that gets all over my truck. They harden and it's real tough to get them off. I wonder if they aren't some of the culprit......

I will say that i think the fender has been repainted, but i'm not sure if the hood has or not.

That failure is a simple sub-standard re-finish failure. I do not think it is related to anything other than it's age and poor repair in the first place.

That started happining to my truck a while back. Started out small like your's than continued to grow. I had the truck re-painted. One option you might look at is Maaco' s special they offer every year. I had the whole truck painted for 200$. They did a very nice job, concidering they only had it for two days. I just got the basic special with no body work since I figure it's going to get beat up anyway. just a thought.

cjungle,
you can do one of the follwing,
1. put down the $$ and get it repainted
2. ty the maaco route and wait 5 years till it comes back. I will bet you it will be less than 5 years but hey I'm optimistic at heart.
3. consider it a part of the trucks character.

Mine is pretty bad now down the hood and a little bit on the top of the roof. My truck is ugly to begin with and as long as I do not see any rust it will just keep getting uglier. but hey thats me.

My back drivers side door and quarter panel has been resprayed and clearcoated. And the clear coat is flaking off. Since it is a 94 LC and white.. I thought I read somewhere that white was the only color that did not have a clearcoat?

What I was wondering is since this clearcoat has also yellowed, and makes that part of the LC look cream, is there a way to just take the clearcoat off? Because the white paint underneath is just about a perfect match after some polishing is done.
As you can see..Its starting from the bottom of the rear windows and moving down.

Thanks for any input,

Gary where ever your read that is was waaaay wrong. What you need to do is drive your truck over to CG's Auto Paint and Body in Columbus/Worthington and do whatever CG says needs to be done.

Regarding the suggestion to take your truck to Maaco...well CJungle, I'd dare say you would be ahead of the game if you gave me the $200, I'd buy a s*** load of decent beer and some cheap ass latex gloss finish (just for the bling) paint and I do believe both the buzz and ensuing paintwork would look better and last longer than Maaco.

Todd, i just may take you up on that. :D

I purchased a rattle can of clear-coat (3M). I'll get some touchup paint, wetsand that area to get to the edge of the failure, touch it up a bit and cover it with some clear.

Concrete have you removed or replaced your battery(s) at all recently...or in the last year? Mine did that same exact thing when I changed my battery...ended up getting a TINY amount of battery acid on it. It was more like just some flakes of corrosion that I didn't wash off imediataly and bingo...eat the clearcoat.

Not that knowing what caused it is a big help, but just curious if that was the case. I know have several spots where the clearcoat has failed and currently I feel it adds character :D...but I am planning a repaint (possibly with a 55 two tone scheme down the line :D)
