I don't think that's it. The stuff I get is 80w90 GL-4/5 IIRC.

Anyway, your call on what you want to spend your money on. I always want more parts. :)

Gear oil developments have come a long way since 1985. Any decent oil from any reputable source is goi g to be fine for our application.

Fuel injection from a 91 FJ80, check
5 speed, check
Paint, primer, orbital sander, sand paper, masking tape, check
Lots of old obsolete FJ60 parts, check

I guess I won't worry about the oil too much. I'll just find something local at a good price.

I've had the transfer-case apart a couple times before, but this time it gets new bearings, etc. Also got a shifter, linkage, and bracket from a late FJ60 to work with my new transmission/ transfer-case combo. I'll paint them a nice gloss black so they won't look out of place on that shiny 5 speed :hillbilly:
 
I removed my old window tint today. Found a used fabric steamer for sale locally. Just $20, so I bought it.

It took me a while, but I took my time and had to remove the front door panels to get the remainder of the tint out. No to mention stopping 1/3 of the way through for pizza! :)

Steam and steam away on the tint. Then start peeling slowly. Heat the area you are working with. I was unable to get all glue to come off in one fell swoop. I just re-steamed and then a light once over with a razor blade got the job done. After that I used some Windex and paper towels.

When I was taking apart the passenger door panel I lost that darn window crank clip. It shot into the grass. I was pissed. Crawled around for a few minutes, then I got smart.

I rigged this up:

Just thought it was a funny story to share. I was determined not to just leave that thing in the grass. Probably took 15 minutes of sweeping the yard. Determined. lol

This Chicago Electric Orbital Sander is pretty awesome. The Harbor Freight paper on the other hand, crappy. Picked up some 180 grit 3M on clearance at Walmart and it's doing more paint removal than the HF 100 grit. Probably would have been done sanding already with the 5 hours I put in yesterday. And mind you this is on the roof only!

I'll report back later. Just taking a break right now.

I use their products quite often. Shake the cans for about 5 min each (especially if you have metallics) Spray distance should be around 7-10" away from the piece and use a 50% overlap on each pass. Steady passes, but the paint is on the thinner side. So, if you go too slow it will run.

Wipe everything down before and after primer with a wax and grease remover.. (NAPA or CarQuest will have a Dupont or similar Car One product)

If the paint matches well you should do that fender too, although at this point no cruiser color on the truck is exactly the same as factory except for the door jambs.
 
Well with everything we do on our cruiser time is the enemy. So the formula here is work until you can't. I sanded that roof a ton. I wanted it to be as good as it's gonna get. Well cause I'd prefer not to do this again haha.

8 sanding disks on Saturday. 9 on Sunday. Then I washed the surface with dish soap and water. Dried the roof and then laid down 6 light coats of primer (2 cans).

Masking the rig off isn't terribly difficult. I had 9'x12' plastic drop cloths on hand for this.

After primer I removed all the plastic and newspaper, rolled it out in the driveway and began to wetsand the roof with 600 grit. Once you get a feel for it, it's kinda fun. I dried the roof and discovered that it was getting close to 1am, and this primer needed more time to dry. Daytime would have been perfect but I took my time sanding.

So with that I leave you with this.

Hopefully I can get back to this soon. I don't really feel bad about leaving it with primer on. Seemed to be the best stopping point.

I do plan on doing the fender. And a few more spots. I should have enough paint for what I'm thinking.

It is far from perfect, but go take a look at picture one again... I'm happy with it. I probably should have painted something smaller than this first, but I'm boneheaded sometimes... or maybe just determined... anyway, I'm happy.

I'll try to get some daytime pictures tomorrow. It was dark while I was wet sanding the clear coat with 1500 grit.

The color appears to be a smidge lighter than what I have now. I think this could be remedied by a heavier coat of primer, and more coats of paint. I think the final count here was 6 coats of primer, 4 coats of color, 3 coats of clear. I could have applied the primer differently. I was using some rapid passes, slowing down the can would make for better coverage. I did that with the paint and clear coat. Worked better.

You are going to love the 2FE with the five speed. It's good that you can take your time with it now that you have a car as well.

5 speed first. Working on having enough time for that. Trust me I really want it installed. I'll probably drive the thing for a week or so once I have it in lol.

Don't fret the clear coat. When rust comes around then fix it lol. My hood doesn't look too good either. Or my rear hatch. Or my fender. Sigh.

I will probably buy more of this paint for the time being. Not as a permanent solution though. Just temporary.

I will say, it photographs better than it looks in person. I got a little aggressive removing the tack. Oops.

Drove it to the grocery store just now. I need that 5 speed installed, 4 speed ain't happy.
 
It looks good. Bottom line, it ain't rusting any more, huge improvement, and 99.9% of the public won't notice. You should be happy.
 
Nice work K. What did you do about gutter caulking?
