I took the chrome off and put it back on without any problems. Just pop the clamps that join the long sections together. Then pull the bottom of the chrome up.
I practiced on my parts rig, ruined one piece. But all the others came off just fine.

So I was in my 60 the other day, and thought to myself. "This shift knob is really showing its age."

So I bought a new one

That was an easy fix. :D

Shout out to @beno for making this an easy process. If you need parts, who you gonna call? beno

More pictures :)

I need to get my transmission jack down here to Houston and I'll start to :wrench:

Another photo for good measure

90179-26002 -- Nut
90311-48022 -- Seal
90311-48010 -- Seal
90316-48003 -- Seal
33142-60030 -- Gasket

It's like Christmas!

 :wrench:

So you're rebuilding the transfer case for, what, the sixth time now? Seems like a waste of time...

:flipoff2:

I'll trade you my h41, only difference is the 5th gear and many miles. :grinpimp:

Not really rebuilding. Just having to take it apart. And it's only the third time. :flipoff2:

You can keep the H41 it's good for noobs who can't handle 5 speeds

Yeah. I have the oiler cup, lever and knob along with the transmission.

The plug I don't have. Is there a factory part number for that? I've read this is usually a "buy this, do that" scenario. I'm actually not clear on this extra hole scenario. I'll take mine apart and see what I have. Or look through some pictures of my t-case. @Output Shaft

indeed it's a "buy this do that:. Not a toyota part. But it has to be done... otherwise the oil will flow right out that hole from the tranny. I got my hex plug at McMaster Carr.

see pic. If you don't have a drill press, I would recommend having a shop drill it. (that's what I did)/ A hand drill is just too sketchy for something as critically important as this.

Since you have an 84 you're going to need drive shafts, crossmember and transfer case shifter linkage from an 85-87... don't forget about these.

& while you're fiddling with the transfer case.... why not install a nice breather hose?

I think I may do that. Looks pretty nice. Thanks Output

I haven't forgotten about those. Got a name of a shop in town that does drive shaft modifications, talking to someone about a transfer linkage, and the cross member needs to stay the same. Will modify if there are clearance issues... Because I am sticking with the 2F bell housing I have to use my cross member mount. I don't want to switch to a different BH and cross member only to lose ground clearance.

And @Output Shaft I am pretty sure that this "2nd gen" 34mm case does not have an open hole that needs to be tapped and plugged. See Georg's POST in this thread: some h55f and split case tech

Looks like the early case (34mm) had three variants in an evolutionary pattern:
  • 1st gen- no oiler provision, no hole
  • 2nd gen- oiler provision, no hole
  • 3rd gen - oiler provision, appearance of hole, but not open
I am fairly certain my case is a second gen. I need to find the pictures on my computer.

Some more food for thought... Gear oil for the H55F... I like the Redline MT-90, but it is mucho dinero. How about Sta-Lube 85W-90? Both are GL-4 rated for our transmissions. Also, what is the oil capacity of the H55F? More than the H42 I assume? I know the fill hole logic probably holds the same, but I need to know how much to buy lol

You are probably right about the hole/no hole in the back plate. You'll find out soon enough when you take it apart...

Thousands of the world's H55F's run on regular dino 85W-90, so it is a safe bet.

I use this

As you know, lots of guys use the Redline stuff and like it. You probably can't go wrong with any of them.

5.1 qts for the H55F if I recall.

The FSM called for 2.6 -3 quarts of oil for the early 4 speed (no spacer) IRRC, so it should be more than that.

Whatever oil you were running before then just a little more right?

More than a gallon... Fantastic lol. I was hoping (more like dreaming) for less than 1 gallon. I won't be using the stuff that is greater than $50 a gallon. It's just too much when I can have something that meets requirements for less.

Like this: Sta-Lube SAE 85W90

Well the stuff I'm using now is GL4/GL5 rated. i.e. not the right stuff.

I believe the 4 speed capacity is 3.3 quarts, diffs and transfer case is 2.6.

Gotta have the good stuff for the 5 speed. Especially since it is new.

For the life of me, I can't remember what I put in my 5 spd. Just don't skimp on the oil...

J

Just get a 5gal pail of 80w90 and call it good.

I have one and use it I all three diffs in my 80 and all 4 cases in my 60.

Don't over think this.

I use whatever is on sale at NAPA.

I am just having an episode of MOTS (Mud Over-Thinking Syndrome)

Is this the stuff you speak of ? GL-1 90 Gear Oil; 80W90

With the current state of my H42 and the fact I only ever ran cheap GL4/GL5 rated stuff is making me have MOTS.
