I have seen some report that simply switching out the high beam indicator with an LED solves the issue. Apparently there is not enough voltage after the harness swap to light the incandescent.
I think I have an LED in there already.

EDIT 5/02/20 - no I didn’t.

This was it. Found the LED bulb I thought I put in. Installed it and now it works!

Something seems funny about my “Brake” light on the dash now. It wasn’t turning off even with an incandescent, but did get brighter when e-brake was pulled up. I checked the fluid level and it’s spot on. Need to research other possible things. Will drive it tomorrow and see if it fixed itself too.

And a pic of the engine bay cause I like it.

Finally installed a winch in the ARB. I won a VR8, ended up working for the people I won it from. Payed up to swap out for a VR8-S because I wanted synthetic. Can’t even tell it’s there. Probably would have been the same with the steel cable model. I mounted it “feet forward,” pretty much all you can do with the ARB. Didn’t need to relocate the control box. Fits in the space. I’ll fab something to cover/protect the synthetic line from sun. OME CS004F front leaf packs for reference with 33x10.5x15.

I also had to replace the hose I didn’t replace previously. Thermostat housing to valve cover hardline. It sprung a leak of course. Do all your hoses when you replace. It’s actually the same hose as for the heater core to valve. 5/8” 4”x6” dimension. Bought at Napa #9807. Fits well enough and doesn’t leak. Forgot to take an installed pic. Minor trimming required.

im very happy I checked this out cause I was just looking for the rear heater soft lines! looking good sir!
Thank you sir!

I took some pics of that line installed from the post above. It’s technically not the right part but a good substitute.

Started my front axle knuckle rebuild today. Found myself with lots of time on my hands recently

Pardon my breathing and strange pauses. Thought this video would be cool to do, did it in one take!

So after the passenger side went great... I found the driver side was another story. The outer nut was loose. Explains the clunk. Passenger side had the same amount of play, but the nut was tight.

I then broke my hammer and I need a new outer nut so I called it for the night after scraping grime off for over an hour.

^ yes that is an old sock covering the spindle. I was tired of dirt getting on it.

Passenger side done. Shocked at how well an old sock and generic brake cleaner got the hub body.

Parts laid out for the driver side.

Now what will the odds be that the local dealer has a 54mm nut in stock? Not in a time crunch at all. Just sayin’

It got all chewed up. Won’t thread on. Inner nut spun off fine and is in good shape.

I would get a few of the knuckle nut kits from Georg or marlin crawler. I keep two in the console, because s***box.

New wheel bearing locknut should be at the local dealer Tuesday. I’ll probably get started on the rest on Sunday.

Also wanted to report on the type of grease I’m using. I saw @FJ40Jim recommended a grease at Tractor Supply with 3% molybdenum. I found some closer to me at Farm & Fleet. Got 4 tubes. $3.19 a piece

Happy 4th!

Got the 60 finished up today. Axle nut 43521-60011 looked a little different than stock but worked just fine. Probably just an updated part. I forgot to take pics of assembly at every stage but I got some.

Front axle has new knuckle and wheel bearings with seals. Front and rear differential service. Bled the brakes and clutch. Clutch fluid was BLACK. Also did an oil & filter change because it’s been a while. Planning on taking this to the upper peninsula of Michigan in a few days!

Super Tech 10W-40 and Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter. Also dumped in some STP zinc additive I bought a long time ago and kept forgetting to use. MasterPro 80W-90 in the differentials.

I wanted to test drive it, but of course it started pouring. Hasn’t rained the rest of the time it’s been taken apart. Also I had just washed the DD. (Photo taken pre-rain)

Going to get the 60 aligned tomorrow. It’s been 13 years or so since the last one LOL. Want to make sure it’s in spec before hitting the highway.

Well. 8 months later. I was just scrolling the forum. Was thinking about the 60. How about an update.

Nothing much has changed, drove to Michigan without a hitch. Did some light wheeling there. IH8MUD

That trip was about 900 miles. Definitely the most I had driven it since moving to IL.

What else... End of October went to a “Tacos and Toyotas” Meet at a local Toyota dealer. Got a shot with this guys sweet 4Runner. We had the oldest rigs there. And yes that’s an FSM being used as a wheel chock #smh

Then I got a Christmas tree at the end of November

Rig has been dormant all winter. I put Stabil in the tank and topped it off for storage. Trickle charger on the battery. Hope to get it out soon and crush some pavement.

Side note. Pretty sure I do indeed having a charging problem. Like right on the edge of being bad. Drove it all the way to and from Michigan like that though. I intend to get my alternator rebuilt through a shop from work.

Got a new radio for it. Bluetooth. HD Radio. Very excite. (Haven’t installed yet) Got a bracket from @ChaserFJ60 on this forum. Excited to install. Will be nice.

Other than that it needs to warm up a little and keep snow out of the forecast.

Thanks for reading!

Pulled it out of the garage yesterday after checking the fluids which were all full! Not that I was expecting them to be empty or anything... transfer has some oil seepage. Oil pan has some seepage. I’m not worried about either at the moment. I’ll look into them later but that seems to be normal as far as I can tell.

Weather was perfect this weekend. 50’s and 60’s. Gonna rain all week so back to the DD tomorrow. Shame, because this thing runs so well.

Watch this boring video of me walking around the rig. I don’t talk or anything. Just the old 2F clacking away.

Dickies Work Socks for the win!!!

Haha. Those are old socks. I wear them until they have holes and then save them for rags! Those socks were new probably 3 years ago lol

Well I was enjoying driving this thing. Took it to work last Thursday. Went to a little meet. Drove it back to work on Friday. Took it to lunch. Then after work it would not start. Caught a few times. Started smelling gas. Then I started seeing gas on the ground under the engine!

Figured it must be a float issue. Had to leave it at work. Then on Saturday it was warmer outside. I got it started. Just puttering and blowing black smoke out of the tailpipe. Moved it into the the shop for the weekend. Started it this morning and it ran great for 3 seconds. Started with no choke. Then back to sputtering.

Tore into it after work today. Brought a spare carburetor with me which had a new accelerator pump and boot. Figured it must be okay. My AP boot was torn so I knew I needed that.

Got my carb taken apart with it on the rig. Didn’t want to have to remove the whole thing. 7 screws, a 10mm, solenoid connector, and one tiny clip and you can remove the air horn with it on the engine.

Pulled my float off. Felt heavy. Shook it. SLOSH SLOSH. Squeezed it lightly and saw a tiny stream of gas coming out from the seam.

Replaced the float with the spare. Set the float height, and slammed it back together. Fired right up. Running smoothly. Drove it home. Idle is lower than before. Need to lean drop again.

Just wanted to share this experience. I’ll post some pictures now.

^ new to me float all set up

This spare carb was rebuilt and never run as far as I can tell. New gasket that I scavenged for my carb. I liked my AP better so I used it again. Needle valve and seat were clean enough.

All of this just to say the carb won’t be staying after this incident. @FJ60Cam might be involved :)

Honestly shocked how clean this fuel bowl is considering it was last rebuilt in 2012, and all this thing does is sit.

And a cool picture from Instagram. That Samurai hasn’t moved in years according to my coworkers. My rig looked good broken down so that counts for something.
