I knew I was getting a very good deal when I bought it last year, but I did not really ask questions about what I was buying. I want this to be my learner car as far as mods and maintenance since I currently know very little about working on trucks.
So my first question in a series of very noob questions is:
If this a power steering box or regular manual?

Dont worry about NOOB questions. I asked them too.

That's a manual steering box. If it were a Power Steering gearbox, it would have had power steering hoses connected to it.

Thank you much. I knew i wasn't steering with power but didn't know if had just crapped out. Thanks for the reply!

Alright, got another one. My choke cable is not attached to anything. The knob didn't push or pull and so I checked it and the other end is just dangling. The rig starts up fine every time and idles slow but consistently. Is there a need for this choke to be attached and when would I use it? It is a F engine if that matters.

Lets see a pic of the carb, specifically showing the side closer to the engine, where i bet an electirc choke wire is connected.... like mine. I have a Weber 38 with an electric choke

Ben. Looks like you have a Weber carb on it. Might have an electric choke like mine does. I no longer have a choke cable at all and if yours is electric you can just leave that where it is in case you ever go back to a carb that doesn't have an electric choke. Just to be sure though is there an electrical wire that runs to the circular white box on the left side of your carb as you look at it from standing at the bumper?

It's in the picture you posted of the choke cable again on the left side of the carb. I just can't see if there is a wire to it or not. Nice looking truck though!

Yes there should be a wire attached there. That would allow your electric choke to work. Where do you have this? If you say it has no issues starting then right now don't worry about it. It may not matter depending on where you are climate wise, but if it gets colder you may have trouble starting.

On another note you say this is a 1975 correct? This should have a 2f engine in it just for future reference and for parts searches. You mentioned it as an F earlier. Unless for some reason someone swapped one in which is unlikely.

I got a new to me 75 last year. This forum has helped immensely. Lots of good information already on here. Do a good read of the FAQ in general and in no time you will start understanding the various parts of your FJ and find interesting ways to modify it. Best of luck and enjoy the ride!

I've got a similar weber carb a previous owner put on and cut the cable as well.
Many others on here have what you have where they or a previous owner cut the choke cable for a new carb. As someone else said if it runs good don't worry about it.
Post up more pics we all like to see the 40s people find. Most likely you'll get more info from people on here from what they see.

Well looky there! I've already received a free upgraded from an F to a 2F just from talking to you guys. Wonder what other great surprises are headed my way.
So If I read it right there is no need to connect this electric choke to anything if it is running fine, yes? My main objective is to try and get this 40 in as dependable running condition as I can afford while keeping it as factory original as possible. That being said, would connecting that choke help it in anyway?
There seem to be a lot of dead-end electrical connections in this thing. Possibly from the PO uninstalling some of his mods, but that loose choke cable appears to be one of the lines I dont have to worry about.

Fairly certain that there is no place to connect that choke cable on that carb. Might be wrong, but I think you need to hook up the electric choke if you need a choke.

I think you are right. I will look into hooking the electric starter up.

Additional pics attached. Yell out if you see something in dire need of attention!
