Hi guys
Looking for models available to mount my recently purchased CVT Mt Bachelor RRT. I do not want to spend on a full on roof rack, don't really need it. Only the cross bars is what Im interested, and the ones that. A.) Don't stick too much to the sides B.) Not that tall, I want the closest to the roof as possible.
The only ones y have found are the Yakima A1 but I want to have several options.

My 80 doesn't have the stock roof rack.

I went with the Inno base rack system. Got the 4 gutter mounts, 56" square cross bars and Large fairing for about $180 on autoanything.com. The whole system seems really stout and came in cheaper than the Thule and Yakima systems. Beware though, that the autoanything website will tell you to get the MD (11") gutter mounts which are completely absurd. They're probably even too tall for a LR Discovery. I went with the lowest mounts, the AD (about 6.5" i think). They're just right and would still clear an OEM rack. You could probably add another pair of mounts and a third bar for a RTT. Good luck. I'll try to get pics up later.

How do you choose the the AD mounts? It doesn't give me a choice.

You may need to call their customer service line. I had to do that to exchange my MD mounts for the AD and complained that you don't even have the option to choose which mounts you want. While they have you on the line they'll do a price match search for you (just saved me $80 on an ARB bumper yesterday) and you can even ask if they have any promos (I think they have a 15% discount one right now). Really great customer service actually.

Also note that if you feel your bars stick out too much, you can cut the Yakima or Thule cross bars to size (square cut with a hacksaw, then file), and then pop the end caps back on on many of their rack set-ups.

If you go with the Yakima towers you can easily make your own cross bars out of steel pipe from home depot and heat shrink wrap. No need to spend big bucks on the cross bars. Send me a PM if you want details.

Ok so i decided to build my own using the kargomasters gutter mounts $95 and some rectangular 3 x 1.5 inch tube. I dont know anything about metals and i bought some gauge 0.188 wich i think is too thick and heavy for this purpose. I can get either 0.065 or 0.125 gauge, wich one you guys recomend? This will be only for the roof top tent

glad you didn't go yakima, partly because they signed on to the anti ohv greater canyonlands national monument crap, but mainly because if you are looking for low, you would't like the height of the a1s. they sit way up there, like the innos.

i originally had my maggi on 1x2 stock on gamviti ends which really sat close to the roof, but the bars weren't wide enough to properly support the tent. so i threw the used yakimas on. now i'm building a set of 1x1 stock bars to go back on the gamviti's.

in an effort to drop the maggi even more, i'm thinking of cutting out the side plate so the crossbar will slip through it and bolt on the underside...any thoughts against?
