Maybe something like 2mbb mentioned... Attaches to the rack and butts against the tire for stability, folds in the middle for ease of storage and maximizing available space, and strong enough to be used as a traction device? ...

for me, interior storage isn't an option, due to dogs as cargo, and Rowland storage panel access. If it could store above rear seat, ala cargo restraint system... I'd consider it. After use as a traction device tho, I wouldn't want to put it back inside (gookyness).

I can easily reach my roof rack by opening any side door n standing on the rocker panel; what I can't do is reach all of it for cargo placement/ tie-down. That's why a ladder stored up top would work: step up, grab ladder, place n get to work.

The dropgate makes a great loading platform for my roof gear, until I'm trying to load out on-site while keeping dogs inside. :Stay Fido, Stay: ... :Here Fido, Here:

and Rope Ladder: my 2c is... have you used one before?
The flexible nature of the rope means you'll:
1) scuff your paint w/shoes as you climb (unless yr rack/sliders are wider than rig)
2) need both hands to climb
3) be unstable as you reach down for goods handed up (which could've been carried up w/you were a free hand available).

i am gonna do a dual side ladder set up too... 1.5 ince tubing, love the look of the ladderrs too

I'm hoping to get the pictures restored off my old PC, but I have some really cool pics of what a roofrack with sturdy ladders on both sides can do to a drip rail when a ladder gets hooked up on a rock. It looked like a can opener was used to peel up the rail, and then it sat there afterwards suspended in mid air, with the roofrack still attached. It ripped the attachment points on the fenders out as well. The ladder and roofrack survived, since it was built really sturdy, but the vehicle had severe damage.

I like mine on the back....mounted on a swing gate!

I know I am arguing Side mount, but that looks good.I know there is a company that makes wild on sheet meta/ Protection for 1st Ten 4 runner Quarter panels. any one make anything like that for 60's ?

I don't dig the shiny nature of Mot's version (nothing personal) but do think that the location makes a lot of sense. You could even extend it down another rung, as that would lift away when you open the gate.

I need a side-mount solution, however, as I have a maggiolina and getting into is a priority...

Yeah, I know stainless steel/chrome is not for everybody, but it's nothing that you couldn't powdercoat.

I can reach up and grab my ladder from the rack while stepping on the rear tires or rear tailgate. Having it as a on-off accesory makes it very flexible and I only take it out of the garage when I need to use it.

Here's some more pics of the rack.

It's made of aluminum so it's relatively light.
Also, it's modular(?) so you can disassemble it if you need to ship it somewhere.

Since the pictures were taken above I have added the two cross bars so I can put bike/snowboard attachments, etc...

Again, not that anybody has asked for it, but I'll put additional pics of some of the racks offered by the same company (I've posted elsewhere before, but probably not in the 60's section).

BTW, you can choose from various mounting platforms (rain gutter, roof rails, etc...), width, and of course, length, all the way up to something like 10+ feet.

Wow, mot's really pushing his stuff. I have one of his 3/4 length rear hatch racks on my 60. love it. use it all the time. makes getting on the roof rack so mush easier. A much better step than the rear wiper blade. after loading 2 canoes and 2 kayaks, its nice knowing there is something to land a foot on, other than the ground 6 ft down. getting too old to jump.

I don't have any of the roof racks (OK, except one!) that I have sittin' around, but have a few ladders, not only for the 60/62 taking up WAY too much space in the attic that I would love to get rid of.

I guess I just need to get my lazy butt off the couch and put them up for cheap here or just to let them go via the e-ghey route...

BTW, I'm glad that you've been enjoying the ladder! (I lose track of who has gotten what and when from me!

I think the worse scenario is the ladder catching on something and tearing the roof rack apart, or ripping the rain gutter. A removable ladder on the side would be fine, but I would want a permanent one on the rear. One good piece of Land Rover engineering is the roof rack/rear ladder on the Defenders. But then they have a rear door setup that makes it a ton easier.

One fix for this is ambulance doors, with a permanent ladder mounted over one side, so that one door can be opened and closed while the other one stay shut. But then you lose your tailgate, and I'd hate that.

Your ladders look like they sit in the gutter for support, and rest against the body when in use?

Any pictures available of one hanging on a 60?

here are a couple pics of mine. hangs on the top of the rear hatch. sort of clamps to the bottom of the rear hatch. (needs to be powdered coated black. not chrome)

only problem i had with mine was I had to take off the hatch to install it. pulled the roof liner at the rear to get to the bolts holding the hinges on. too tight of a fit. and it is tapered, so it only goes in a specific place along the hatch. too far to one way or the other, it rubs when it is opened.

makes a great handle for opening and closing. if not used as a handle, it makes a great head whacker!

slow boat shipping takes awhile. but, glad i have it. can't get on the roof without it.
