If you want to assemble your own system, check out Groucho's offering on page 2 of members' storefront, heavy duty roof clamps and cross members, I have four complete sets of his clamps and cross members. Very strong and adjustable to within 3 or4 inches of the roof or raised to 5 or six inches. You can carry sheet goods for construction and other big items securely. Then you can, when the situation demands, add a roofbox, or a traditional roofrack of virtually any size. May sound like a belt and suspenders approach, but you have versatility, strength, and don't always have to ride around town with a roofrack loaded with back country gear.

I was thinking half as many cross bars too...

When not needed, I've also pulled the rack off the cross bars and just run it that way. (looks kinda like a pair of Thule bars mounted up there). Works for just strapping larger stuff to it and not carrying the whole rack up there.

Make your own for way cheap and you'll love it. I wheeled with the guys from Wasatch Cruisers this spring and they all had these awesome homemade ones. The plans for them have to be somewhere, but you don't even need them.

All they had done was get some of those aluminum folding ATV loading ramps, the kind that are hinged and fold over. You take the hinges off and bolt the ramps together so they're solid. Buy the feet from somebody like Defender and bolt them to it. If you want to make the rack longer in the front go to Home Depot and get some 2 inch aluminum strapping and make it look a little fancier.

I liked it so much I pulled my Defender rack off my vehicle and am making one, so if somebody wants a Defender rack for CHEAP let me know.

Define cheap because you are in the same town and that would be awesome to not incur shipping

Got a surco from Summitracing.com and I think when all was said and done i paid 275 for shipping, rack, and mounts. FOr my 62. I have had it loaded all the way with 2 coolers, a 31" tire, and all of our camping gear and it did fine. you could do a little mod if needed but I dont put much more that that in there anyway. And there are alot of different attachments you can buy. THis is my 2nd Surco, no complaints.

PM defining cheap has been sent.

i have the good half of an ARB on my truck... Im told the truck it came off of rolled and crushed the front half... I dig my half rack its the perfect size!

pictures are in my ROTW link in my signature.

I'm prob. gonna buy durangodds's Defender Rack, some feet and a spare tire carrier and slap it up there. It's a little wide (overhang) so I'm gonna section it out a bit and sleeve and re-weld it.

I think the defender looks like a great rack, still ccan't make up my mind and so many other things to work on not in a hurry. I may end up with a topless B*T**60 myself. But I bet I get my tailgate mod in before you. :whoops: sore point.:bounce::bounce::bounce:

wait for that! I'll just have to make due with putting in the new third, mounting the air tank and wiring up the winch, oh and 4wheelin' :p:rolleyes:

That wheelin part I seem to remember how much fun. Better than wrenching ever two weeks or so, well some day. Glad that Ingrid is about ready to roll again, the flagship BT returns Huray!!!:bounce::bounce::bounce:
