Roof Rack Cross Bar width for FJ62

I'm looking at buying a used pair on craigslist but the crossbars are only 50 inches. I have a feeling they might be too short and don't want to drive the distance to pick them up if that is the case. When I measured from gutter to gutter at the back of my FJ62, seemed to me the exact width was about 50 inches. Do the gutter mounts widen out an inch on both sides? If so, these might work.

Any input from you guys? Should I try to find 54 inch cross bars for some wiggle room or will the 50 inchers work? Thanks.

Load Bar Width?

I asked the same question recently. Sounds like 52" might be the minimum. I'm looking to pick some up soon. I'll be looking for 60" bars.

I will measure mine when I get home but I am pretty sure they are 58" (or whatever it is). The 52" will definitely be too small.

Yup the 58" is stock to go with, mine are old Yakima.

I thought 60" as well, but I went with 65" per the ORS.com rack advisor and I'm glad I did. Looks mean and fills the space well. Also makes a great handhold for accessing the roof gear I occasionally affix up there.

Worry about catching them on trail objects (tree limbs, etc)?

I think the gain outweighs the draws. My rack is more for water toys, Xmas trees and lumber though. I had a huge ugly safari rack initially when I got it and that was far worse for snagging. I think it depends on where you go. Southern ca is more rocks than saplings and grabby branches.

Been known to happen. Low tree limbs, grape vines, tree trunk leaning over the road can all snag a crossbar overhanging the roof.
